The Shrimp and Grits. Amazing. Enough said.....
The drinks and appetizers were wonderful. But a loud and cold dining area, lack of refills, and okay main dishes brought down the experience.
Charming restaurant, very good food, excellent service, good location
Bread was burnt.
Food that was served did not reflect what was listed on the menu. I don’t eat meat, so I ensured I ordered something that did not contain meat, yet it was served with bacon. Took a long time (the end of the dinner, after the check) for me to receive my meal. One person with us ordered the shrimp and grits, which looked more like shrimp soup.. one person ordered a large salad and only received a half salad.
This was truly a negative experience all around. Would not recommend.
Great shrimp and grits
First biz lunch since March, and we unanimously selected the Swamp Fox Restaurant at the Francis Marion Hotel! Bacon & Cheese Hushpuppies... She-Crab Soup... a Turkey Reuben... Collards... a Caesar with roasted Chicken... and two Bibb Salads with locally-sourced Shrimp!
Management—as well as our skilled and friendly server, Dee—deployed careful attention to detail in terms of social distancing... one-time-use // disposable menus, check holders, and tableware(when appropriate)... and, as usual, a wonderful and welcomed oasis for a lunch with friends. Many thanks to the hospitality and culinary team at 387 King Street! 😃
It’s Was ok!! Food was not the best
This is a Hotel Restaurant, but HOLY MOLEY the food is fantastic!! It really is worth every dollar spent. It is charleston level dining at its finest. Go here and be prepared for excellent food!
Excellent food (salmon and filet mignon), really enjoyed the piano, and our server was professional, attentive but not intrusive. A bit pricey, but I would highly recommend it!
We thoroughly enjoyed the Southern Sampler appetizer, the She Crab Soup, and the Pan Seared Crab Cakes.
Excellent food, good service, quiet. A good meeting place for business or a pleasant evening.
Arrived on time. Our reserved table was already taken by another couple. We were seated by a drafty cold window. Moved to an adjacent table - warmer. Luckily the place was not busy.
Wife ordered filet mignon. None available - ran out. Replaced with ribeye. Not so good - quite fatty.
I ordered crab cakes. Came blackened - probably not the best for burnt crab. Side of black eye beans with whole bacon slices and what seems like mushroom soup sauce. Some refinement may be good?
Waitress was fine, but ‘remote’.
Very disappointing. Nil points!
Beautiful Traditional restaurant, with a very classy feel. The lunch portions are very large. The salmon salad was phenomenal. Great service.
Highly recommend Swamp Fox. Food and service awesome.
Food, service, value was great. Since this was the SEWE weekend, we knew if was going to be busy. One draw back was walking in; the cocktail area tables were full of dishes. We cleared a spot for ourselves and got some drinks from the bar. Wait for the table was short. As stated, food, service, value was great. The one thing to improve is the layout and lighting on the restaurant. One would think that in a nearly 100 year old hotel, the restaurant would have some 20's charm. Not so, lighting is way to bright (felt like a cafeteria, Denny's like) and stemware was "industrial". Cant remember if there was linen tablelcothes or placements. Either way tableclothes should be down for dinner. Wine list needs work as there are very few selections. To-go items should be packed by the server, not the guest. Bathroom was "coded"...and had to find a staff member who knew the secret code. All else was good...thanks much!!
The food was variable - some of it was excellent (shrimp and grits) and other dishes (fried chicken) was mediocre. It was a little high priced and given that Charleston has soooo many fabulous restaurants, would definitely choose someplace else.
Food was cold or undercooked and service was slow
Great server, good food and a very nice set up for the occasion
Food was ok- place real busy for the holiday
Love the hotel and the Swamp Fox. Stay every year for SEWE from Wednesday until Monday; great time, great food, and good people!
Only place could get valentine day reservation within walking distance of where we were staying. Placed in a back room that seemed to have been opened for overflow crowds. Food was not very good. My wife and daughter both complained about the taste of the vegetables. Catfish was good but a little too spicy for my taste. Prices about average for area but not worth the food we ate. Portions are large. Maybe a different day would have been better, I was told they had a very nice lunch. Would not return, too many places to try in Charleston.
We ordered Mac&Cheese as a side. It never arrived. No one came to the table to check on our meal until we were done. We were offered the mac&cheese to go but declined. It was removed from the bill. Our main course was delivered to the table as we were still eating our salad appetizer. As soon as we finished eating the server brought us our check. No offer for dessert or coffee. I feel we were being rushed out to be able to seat more customers. The meal was very delicious however the feeling of being rushed ruined the experience
Valentines dinner. Lauren our server was terrific. Great smile! Very helpful! Our entree’s were really very good-my Fiancé had the Lobster Ravioli she said was absolutely delicious and I had the Shrimp and Grits that Lauren had suggested. That was really great and i would say possibly the best I’ve had. My only negative —I was not too impressed by the Hushpuppies which seemed to be overdone. Overall a nice dining experience.
I had a 2:00 reservation and called to move the time to an hour later. The person that answered the phone said that I could do that, no problem. When I actually showed up (at 3:00), I was told that if I wanted to eat, I would have to eat in the lounge as they were setting up for dinner and I could not eat in the dining room. I was not told that when I called. The food was good...My Fiancé ordered the shrimp and grits which was delicious and I ordered the special, which was fried catfish, collards and red rice. The service was good considering that the bartender was by himself and the place was busy, so he had his hands full.
This was supposed to be a special occasion for us, as I proposed to my fiancé that afternoon before lunch. It was a little disappointing.
Farm fresh meal was excellent. Piano music in the background made it a pleasant dining experience.
Our waiters last night were so nice! I’ll definitely be coming back
Very nice place to eat. I had southern fried chicken. Cooked perfectly, moist inside, crispy outside. Wife had pork tenderloin. Again, cooked perfectly.
Service and food were excellent. We were made to feel welcome from the minute we arrived. Maitre d was wonderful as was the server. Both made the evening special.
The food wasn’t as good as we were hoping. The crawfish étouffée was good, if not a tad salty. The pimento cheese appetizer was just a bowl of cheese, that was odd, and the cinnamon ice cream was way too sweet.
The Swamp Fox just didn’t live up to the hype it had around it. It’s not as bad as Hyman’s, but it’s no Revival.
This is a great restaurant with fantastic food. It is a hidden gem because locals mostly dine at this restaurant. The prices are wonderful.
We spent a week in Charleston at the Francis Marion Hotel which houses the Swamp Fox Restaurant. During our stay we had 3-4 occasions to eat there for lunch and for dinner. On busy nights the bar is full and the place gets pretty LOUD! Not the place to enjoy an "intimate" dinner by any means. On less busy nights, the restaurant is uncrowded, cozy, and serves up delicious southern foods. The ambiance of the restaurant could use improvement, but it is comfortable and has a sharp and attentive wait staff!!
If you are a fan of collard greens (YUM), they serve up some of the best. Also, we enjoyed the fried green tomato sandwich!!
Recommend this place, but not for intimate evening. Is great for lunch or a standard dinner for groups.
Overall, we enjoyed the experience. Service was very good, food was OK. I had the salmon and my wife the fried chicken.
Our waitress was most understanding as we waited for the third member of our group to join us, and then allowed us to continue to visit after we had finished eating without any overt or subtle hints suggesting we leave. We will be back!!!
Restaurant needs some updating, it was not what I was expecting for King Street or the prices.
Dirty dishes were sitting around when we got there (in other tables) and were never bussed.
Ran out of the ingredients for one of the most popular cocktails (we were there at 7pm!).
Most likely won’t be back as there are much better choices in the area for the same price.
Signature shecrab soup was so,so. Served on the cold side which made it thick with flour.
Good food, atmosphere, and staff..just not enough staff ...
We are locals and normally cook dinner at home for visiting family but this was the every-other in-laws Christmas so we decided to eat out. The restaurant was busy, being one of only a few that was open on Christmas night. We had reservations but encountered a short wait before being seated. We could have had a drink at the bar through which one enters the restaurant, but instead used that time to review the menu while listening to some excellent music the pianist unobtrusively provided. Our table was in a snug corner just across from the kitchen. Our waiter, Brendan, was very knowledgeable, and helped guide our selections from the menu. He gave just the right amount of attention as he checked in on us during our meal. The food was great, especially the fried green tomatoes, a bib salad, and salmon (cooked perfectly with a lightly glazed crust over tender steaming innards) served with mashed sweet potatoes and a bed of collard greens. The Napa Cellars Cabernet Sauvignon nicely complemented the meal and it was quite reasonable in cost, especially when so many of the peninsula’s restaurants overprice their wines. We decided against dessert to get an early start on New Year’s resolutions, but Brendan brought us a butter cake topped with vanilla ice cream to help us forget the seating delay, and it was too much to resist! This is a lovely restaurant located just inside the Francis Marion Hotel, conveniently located at the corner of King and Calhoun, with an adjacent parking deck. We’ll definitely be back. Bon appétit!
The food was just OK, some of it came out cold or with the wrong sides. I assume they weren’t staffed properly or managed well for our Christmas meal. I wouldn’t go back to try again and cannot recommend it.
Wonderful low country menu with wonderful service and ambiance.
