The Swan Inn - Swinbrook
Lovely special gastro pub mainly because of location and garden etc. Pleasant and efficient staff. Food was fine if a little pricey but to be expected in the Cotswold area. Only disappointment was my starter size of asparagus....only 2 spears. But overall a good experience and will recommend.
Nice building in a nice location. Some of the male staff need to smile and give a warmer welcome. The food is adequate rather than exciting.
Average in all respects. Food could have been a bit more generous but nicely cooked and attractively served. Rather expensive for the quality and quantity.
Wonderful place with great quality food, chickens in the garden and interesting history
There are some very nice features and some rather disappointing ones. The tables' appearance and particularly the positioning within the building,,is quite random, but this probably has to do with fitting in with the eccentricities of the old building. It took us three goes to find a table that was really comfortable.
The service was ok but not sparkling. The food, similarly, was good but not outstanding and we thought
overall quite expensive. We would definitely come again as overall the location and the ambience is great.
It could just do with a little tweaking to make it an outstanding venue
We loved our stay. So very quaint and comfortable. The staff is warm and helpful, and the surroundings are lovely. Several walks available from the inn’s front door. Highly recommend!
Yes but avoid the soggy mackerel main course! Feel it is 15% overpriced. Expensive exercise.
Out for a birthday meal and it was a perfect choice for dinner.
Lovely food and great service with very attentive staff.
A little off the beaten track so to speak but still a nice place on the whole. We were placed in a very quiet part of the dining area which meant that there was little atmosphere. With the tables so close together you were also conscious that other diners would easily overhear any conversations. Also, the table were were sat at was a bit rickety but apart from that it was a pleasent dining experience.
Awful service from the start. We had to wait 10 mins to be seated and had to ask twice as the first person left us standing - obviously forgot about us.
When we finally got seated, we waiting a long time for someone to come over so had to go and get someone to ask for menus and to order drinks.
Same at the end of the meal.... had to chase people down for the bill and then again for the machine to make our payment.
Very good food and beautiful setting. Just a shame the service let’s them down so much. We have been to the pub before and experienced the same poor service each time and will not be returning and would not recommend based on this. Such a shame as a beautiful pub and location.
Very nice meal and good service.
Nice enough. Sloppy and slow service. Ever so slightly patronising chap who “greeted” us who I recognised as the manager. I wonder if Mr Cameron was treated in the same way. I’m sure not. Glorious location and pleasing interior but one senses they foolishly coast on their reputation. A bit of a shame as we were staying here too, and I would have expected more. Especially from those who would say that they had been well brought up. It’s been about three years since we stayed before. To be repeated ? I doubt it.
As locals we have visited this pub many, many times over 20 years or more.
The pub has recently changed manager and some staff.
On arrival, the pub was obviously very busy with a wedding party on the point of leaving.
The Manager was cool and not very welcoming - unlike the last manager.
The serving staff in contrast were friendly despite obvious signs of coping with a busy lunchtime.
A warning of a 25 min wait for main courses turned out to be an underestimate of the eventual 45 minute delay. The food was about as good as previous occasions but a special on the day seemed under par for its £20+ price. After the main course, menus were supplied for desserts but no-one came to take an order for over 20 mins. A disappointing lunchtime visit.
We sat at our table to 15 minutes with no interaction with staff (except bar) where we had bought drinks. We then asked to order. Our orders were taken 10 minutes later and we were told that there would be a 25/30 minute wait. Unfortunately we were on a tight wedding schedule. Food arrived 45 minutes after ordering, not 30. Food was fine. Surely if you have booked a table at 1.00, you should be able to order and eat one course comfortably without rushing. We had one main course but otherwise sandwiches and starters. We had to leave at 2.15
We have been to the Swan Inn several times and have always had a good time. The food has always been delicious and we love the atmosphere. Very helpful staff always with a smile on their faces. I can't fault it. I only wish that it was a bit nearer to where we live but never miss an opportunity to go there!
We booked a table for Mother's Day evening -- myself and my two adult sons. One son ordered the dish of the day but requested no potato, perhaps some extra green veg instead. Broccoli was included in the dish (this was one of the reasons he ordered it). When the the dish was served, the meat was on a bed of mashed potato, and he was told there was no broccoli. Instead of offering another hot green vegetable, he was given a small bowl of salad 15 mins later. So having requested no potato, the lamb was on potato; and who wants a cold salad with lamb? All very compromised-- he had to scrape the potato off the meat and then compensate with a bowl of cold greens. Not a good meal.
I ordered a medium cooked steak. It arrived in a pool of watery blood and the meat was cold -- it was barely cooked, and almost impossible to chew. Chips arrived about 10 mins later, when they should have been served with meal. My other son ordered the burger -- which arrived about 15 mins after the other two dishes. It meant that either the first two diners had cold food or we were not eating together. He also order extra mayo -- which never arrived.
We left after the first course. Why wait around, pay more and get poor service and a disappointing second course as well? The family of 5 who were on the adjacent table, waited nearly 30 mins for their starters, and then after a long wait -- maybe another 40 mins -- they were offered the dessert menu although their main course had not been served. We left before anything else arrived a their table so didn't see the outcome this inefficiency.
I didn't complain on the night because my sons were treating me to a Mother's Day meal -- I didn't want to appear dissatisfied or spoil the evening for them further. We joked about the poor service -- friendly but chaotic enough to spoil the evening.
Take a leaf out to the book of any Grk taverna -- properly trained staff and fantastic, good value food.
We thought that the food standard was unremarkable and the seating area cool, even when sitting next to the fire. The service from staff was OK given that it was Mothering Sunday afternoon.
Beautiful setting with adequate off road paring if you get there early enough! Otherwise it's on the road. Food was excellent with unusual veggie dishes and very tasty. Service was quick and friendly - lots of staff on duty [Sunday lunch]. Several small rooms for dining - log fires and wood burners. Looked like a good garden. Our first visit but will definitely go again.
Service a little slow but good food
It was a wonderful birthday lunch I took my husband. It was lovely as we sat outside, I’m glad I booked a table as it was very busy for a Friday afternoon.
The only point I would like to say is the car park is very small and odd shaped, so it couldn’t hold the capacity of cars for the amount of dinners.
Other wise over all 5 stars from a very pleased couple.
Lovely day and delicious lunch. A relaxed atmosphere and attentive service. Wine a little disappointing for the price but overall very nice day.
The Swan Inn on Sunday was completely packed with walkers and family groups but they managed to turn out, I think, over 140 covers of deliciousness. The staff were attentive, despite the crowds, and the place itself is such a pleasure to visit. Well done all.
Would recommend with reservations. We waited 30 minutes for drinks to be served, food arrived 10 minutes later unfortunately it was the mains and not the starters?!! We received a passing apology however there was no recognition of this in the subsequent service or overall bill. We would probably give it another go as the food when it eventual arrived was very good but definitely not on a busy Sunday.
Great pub and excellent service
Portion sizes could be much bigger for the mains!
Very poor service had to wait an hour for fish and chips many people who came in after us were served before us when the meal came it was not up to standard a few chips small piece of fish and mushy peas much to runny all together not good value
Took 1 hr 20 minutes from ordering to get food. Kids were starving. Good food, nice people.
I have eaten here many times and the food is always excellent.
Great location for a romantic meal for two or lunch/dinner with friends and family.
Lovely spot with country charm! Friendly locals and staff + delicious food + good wine + a seat by the fire = a wonderful night. Will be returning!
Fourth time we have been. First course, my wife had beetroot/cheese etc starter, most disappointing. I had lamb kidneys , delicious. Second course, wife had rib eye £27 and rather small, a bit gristly, I had hake, nicely cooked, samphire etc under it horrible. Third course my wife had chocolate fondant lovely, I had apple crumble, horrid, left half of it, what ion earth was the topping, far too much. I had a glass of Malbec (19) and a pudding wine (51), nice. Pigswill excellent. Service was pleasant but had to be called, staff sitting at bar chatting spoilt the atmosphere.
Beautiful location right on the water. We booked for Sunday lunch and I emailed in advance to check they had veggie options. When we got there, there was no veggie roast so that was disappointing. Staff seemed very stressed and sat us down then forgot about us for some time. Had to ask twice for my wine to be brought. Then the roast arrived... really bad. Tiny portion, rubbish veg selection, plain old chicken breast. For the price, I was really disappointed. Didn’t even order dessert as it didn’t seem worth it. Such a shame - this could have been so great with a different chef and menu! Stop for a drink but don’t eat.
Sorry to say we have been several times and it has been great but this did not come up to the usual standards unfortunately
Really loved the roe deer haunch and lack of Muzak very much appreciated. A very relaxed and enjoyable lunch. Yes we'll be back soon. Thank you
Yes, I certainly would recommend the Swan to friends, full atmosphere, friendly efficient staff, and good food, additionally, wonderful old photos.
The very best in gastro-pubbing!
A wonderful Sunday lunch in this lovely Cotswold pub. Thoroughly recommend.
Cosy, friendly pub with attentive staff and great location and atmosphere. Menu a little limited but overall good.
The Mitford Association makes it a particularly evocative dining venue
Superb meal especially for my husband, he has intolerances, the chef did a special main course for him and it was excellent. Many thanks to the team
Swan as lovely as ever! Warm welcome. Excellent service. Rib eye steaks perfect.
A good country pub with first rate food and wonderful staff.
We had a lovely time.
