The Tunbridge Wells Eating House
Using the finest produce Kent and Sussex has to offer, the team at The Eating House like to produce simple and classic dishes to wow on every occasion.
Have not been back since we had my Dad's 80th birthday meal in the upstairs room here (which was very good) so was looking forward to eating here again. The foaccia was amazing - warm, bouncy, fresh out of the oven! While not an extensive menu there is definitely something for everyone. Scallops and black pudding were a classic starter, and the chicken burger was cooked just right. No room for dessert. Good range of small plates too. Service was really friendly and on-point. Good VFM overall - 2 appetisers, 2 starters, 2 mains and 2 bottles of Merlot came in at around £55 per head. The only reason I haven't given ambience full marks is that the eating area used to feel like a proper French brasserie , with lots of pictures on the walls and a cosy feel to it. It now has pink blossom wallpaper and a large blossom "tree" coming down from the ceiling and while quite pretty, it doesn't give an especially cosy feel. Preferred the decor from when it was Brasserie des Sources. But that's just a personal thing, and couldn't fault food or service.
The food was not good
Had a chicken burger with very little chicken in it and couldn’t cut the burger bun wii a knife
Quite noisy but to be expected as we sat outside for the music on the bandstand!
Service was lovely and very prompt and friendly and the food was delicious. Particularly good veggies with the Sunday roast
Great food and atmosphere-we were there for Jazz on the Pantiles on a Thursday so of course it was loud but that is what we wanted! Best option for outside eating on a Thursday. Have been before where there is the usual a la Carte menu and that was excellent too. Gluten free friendly as well. Charming service.
TW Eating House (basically the dining area of the TW Hotel on the Pantiles) utterly deserted on a summer Friday night - very odd and inexplicable to the staff.
Sat outside; food, friendly service, efficient and swift. My lamb was over spiced and tough but not over cooked. The half lobster was okay but clearly the runt of the litter! Fresh salad leaves with Parmesan shavings.
All round, very average.
The service was exceptional and really attentive. All the staff are very friendly and professional. The food is obviously pre catered and as soon as we ordered was on the table which is probably a sign of pre plated food to cope with the high demand of the busy Jazz evening. The main was very simple nothing to rave about. It was hot, well presented but quite small portions on plates.
I would recommend eating here for the experience of the jazz evening ambience but try not to sit directly in front of the band as you cannot talk freely until the break as quite loud but also nice to be amongst the party vibe!
Unfortunately, despite the fact the restaurant was virtually empty, two out of three drinks were incorrect. We had no starters and two of the mains were very good, but the third had to be sent back as the burger was not 'well done'. It was replaced (without fuss) but the returned burger was so 'well done 'as to be inedible. Two of the three puddings (£7 each) were unpleasantly sweet and almost inedible. However, the third was very nice.
This is the most perfect location, particularly on a sunny day. However, the food was not great. We went for breakfast and my scrambled eggs had tonnes of shell in them. I mentioned this to the waiter and he offered to replace it. When my breakfast was returned the scrambled egg was raw. I didn't have it in my heart to say it still wasn't right. When another waiter cleared the plates he didn't comment on the uneaten food. The bill, when it came, included my breakfast and also an item that we didn't order. We spotted this and we were refunded for the item that we hadn't ordered. I do think they should have knocked the price of my breakfast off the bill, as my food arrived when everyone else had almost finished. We will vote with our feet and go elsewhere in future. There are lots of other lovely cafes and restaurants in the Pantiles.
We had a very nice meal served by a very nice young lady from Portugal called Katrina, nothing was too much trouble. Excellent time was had by all.
The welcome was warm, the cepe mushroom veloute was stunning, the cauliflower cheese was deliciously indulgent, the staff were attentive, and my husband was brought a little surprise birthday dessert which was a lovely touch. Also, Matfield is beautiful. Can't wait to go back to the Poet!
But with reservations I would recommend. White wine list was down to 2 options due to us visiting on a Bank Holiday! You'd had a busy weekend - not ideal but luckily the Chardonnay was lovely. Sweet potato fries turned up finally, but we'd almost finished salad by then so they were wasted really.
Our waitress was very lovely and we weren't rushed by the team either which again was really good.
Very nice food with great service
Lovely atmosphere, very cozy place
mixed meat board and bread to share, could have had more bread and for what it was it was expensive.
Two of us had steak burger which was excellent. Another family member had chicken burger, the chicken was cold and also bone in it!
But mainly the service was poor, waited a long time between courses and had to call someone each time we wanted something. Could have left without paying as waited quite a while for someone! Went to the till with the bill in the end. I wish I had taken the service charge off the bill.
We came here as our hotel had said they had vegan options but turned out they didn't. This place didn't have loads but were very accommodating on making changes so we had a fantastic meal. 3 courses!!
innovative vegan options
The starter and the vegan burger really nice but as on our previous visit the "oven chips" were inedible - probably packet frozen and reheated. Shame when the chef has done so well creating lovely vegan options. A whole meal or multigrain bun would be nice with the burger too but that's a personal thing.
The service is always attentive and thoughtful, without being aloof and over formal.
Its great to be able to relax on the sofas with a drink prior to eating.
So good that our fostered rescue dog was welcome too.
How nice to have loose proper green tea though the cup and saucer feel industrial rather than fine china :)
Would always go back - lovely ambience here.
Very limited menu. Far less choice than the website!!! Some dishes were really below par, so choosing was a lottery? Linguine with brown shrimps had hardly any shrimps!
Really enjoyed our visit, food and service was great and the staff were helpful with our toddler, great location
Nice interesting restaurant in a lovely part of Tunbridge Wells.
Sorry we give you , 4/10. so therefore we will not be returning
It was quiet. We were early. Excellent service. Our little doggie was welcome. Food pedestrian - white griddled (ie burnt in lines) bread with the very nice soup; frozen and reheated chips and a white bun with the amazing veggie burger - allow the chef more freedom to create the whole of the meal not just the scrummy burger.
Superb venue for a really delicious Sunday lunch. Good service and a great location - excellent.
Our second visit this year. No complaints at all. Friendly staff, good food and a most enjoyable experience. Thank you.
Lovely Saturday lunch with Friends!
We had Gorgeous chicken salads & the Rose was flowing! Great service & food portions and quality are amazing.
Excellent meal and lucky enough to get great table outside
Excellent lunch in a perfect spot to watch and listen to Jazz. Food as great as usual, service fab and good value. Would always recommend as it’s one of our favourites.
Good quality all round. Will be back.
It was a lovely setting but the food was very average.
Event though the resaturant was pretty empty (Monday night) , still felt the atmosphere was good. Service was attentive. Quality was good. Price was ok
Good service and excellent food.
Nice place to dine outside and enjoy live music on a Thursday evening. Would recommend for a special occasion
Excellent menu, delicious food beautifully cooked, excellent wine, charming & attentive service, overlooking the historic Pantiles. Thanks for an outstanding dinner!
Hello, I like others always have a problem with the level of service at TW hotel. There is a lack of attentiveness a lot of the time, and also, the tables are left with empty plates and glasses for way to long after eating. I always get the feeling of disorganization, however on saying that , the ambience is very nice and the food is pretty good and its a wonderful setting. Just the service needs sorting out. Thanks
We had three courses, steak was ok but not the best. Disappointed with 12.5% service charge automatically put on! I am happy to tip when service is above expected but should not be assumed, in my opinion. Overall a good meal in a great location we would go again at some point.
The best possible way to enjoy this restaurant is in the daytime or on a warm summer evening when you can dine outside in the atmospheric Pantiles. We went on a rather chilly Friday night, albeit in summer, and dined indoors where it was a little windy round the edges. But it did not spoil our overall dining experience. The fillet steaks were delicious and the pepper sauce just brilliant. Our German friends had the pork belly and cleaned their plates and told us it was delicious also. I would definitely recommend it. Puddings were sumptuous, albeit on the large size so you could share. I have also been there for ordinary lunch and for Sunday lunch and thought it very good and somewhere I would return to, which I have. The all-inclusive bill for 4 of us, for 2 courses, with wine and service, was about £165 which I thought fair for an above average experience.
Lovely clean Parisian style restaurant. Great discreet service, food superb; wine a tad pricey.
Fantastic time as always in the TW Hotel.
It never disappoints and the staff are outstanding.
First time back here in 10 months , and on a Monday evening - always a testing time in terms of ambience anywhere I think - and it came up trumps. Nice table position - in fact very few positions where one would think "wouldn't want to sit there" so the layout inside has improved a bit from when it was "Brasserie des Sources." Food was great and portions in the mains on the generous side. My friend had the truly fabulous harissa lamb, incredibly tender, which I will have next time! I was restricted on diet so had a chicken and bacon salad but it had plenty of interest including some lovely salty black olives. The prix fix menu if good VFM - my friend had it I didn't - but they did forget to account for that at the end and needed to re-do the bill. Still the service was friendly and well-timed. Will be back soon.
It took a long time to get our food. Other customers who arrived after we did seemed to jump ahead of us. Waited 25 minutes for bill. We eventually had to ask again before we left. Could easily have gone without paying it was that poorly organised. The 12.5% service charge was removed from the bill at our request.
