The Whippet Inn
Delicious food -we were a party of 5 and four of us had two different types of steak, all cooked to perfection and I had the tuna steak which was wonderful. Very attentive staff and knowledgeable about the wines and steaks. Would definitely recommend and we will definitely return next time we're in York.
Staff were very knowledgable and helpful and the service was excellent. The food was cooked just to our taste and although on the face of it seemed quite expensive was excellent value for money. Would highly recommend.
Just excellent food and perfectly balanced service!
Would recommend to anyone. New favourite place to eat. Everything was perfect. No complaints what so ever, this is rare as I am a perfectionist.
We love the Whippet Inn, Food excellent
Service fabulous our Waiter Joe who was Great on his knowledge of the wine we chose to go with our fabulous steaks
We can’t recommend the Whippet Inn enough 😊
Food was amazing however service was poor would recommend the steaks
Absolutely fantastic! My boyfriend and I were bought vouchers for the whippet for Christmas last year and we finally got around to using them. Service was spot on.. very friendly staff. The food was excellent.. we shared the chateaubriand and it did not disappoint! Cooked to perfection and came with sides of onion rings, chips and green beans. Can’t wait to visit here again!
Friendly staff and valuable recommendation. Will come again
The atmosphere was good and the service was excellent however it was let down by the food.
The steak was £65 just for the sharer and our meal was £95 for the 2 of us. We came for my wife’s birthday from Bristol. The steak was covered in salt and was very chewy for what it was.
A lovely place to have a meal.
The food is just amazing and my husband will be coming again when we visit York.
I would highly recommend this restaurant
Amazing steak and great service! would definitely return!
Wonderful night at the Whippet!
Recommended to us by some people we met in London and we weren’t disappointed!
Bar was great for a pre dinner drink- good choice of drinks.
Had a fabulous table in the corner of the dining room- which was full all night! The ambiance in there was great and the music was amazing!
We had the steak- as did nearly everyone, I think. It was fantastic- cooked perfectly and with chunky chips!
Staff were brilliant - really knowledgeable about the food and the wine- wine list was extensive and just our cup of tea!!
Can’t wait to return!
Amazing food, wine, gin, atmosphere. We had a great time. The steak was cooked perfectly, the veg crispy and delicious and the wine was perfect
Lovely restaurant, great food and service would definitely recommend
Excellent food. Service was great. Everyone pleasant and made us feel welcome. Would 100% recommend and if in York in the future would make a point in revisiting.
Delicious food! Staff were very professional and friendly( Joe was our waiter)! Definitely recommend. Many thanks for a very enjoyable Sunday lunch! I’d recommend booking to avoid disappointment.
Good Sunday lunch and wine and excellent service with good knowledge
Beautiful Food and attentive service. Lovely atmosphere. If we lived in York we would be definitely be regular visitors and will visit again next time we are here. Which i'm hoping will be very soon!
Brilliant service, excellent food, quality atmosphere
We all opted for the Chateaubriand. It was Magnificent.
It does take a while to serve that particular dish, but it's definitely worth the wait.
A great place, with good beer and good wine.
Can’t fault it. Great atmosphere, great service, great food.
Great restaurant food on point. Have been once before and went back this time with family. My husband normally avoids red meat 95% of the time. This is the first time I have seen him enjoy a steak as much and finish the lot. All 4 of us asked for steak to be cooked slightly different and all 4 were cooked to our liking.
Staff are friendly and courteous and helpful.
Definitely won’t be our last visit.
Lovely meal , very helpful waiter
Wasnt for me, nice decor went into the bar first as we were early, then was told the table was already for us, walked round and was left to our own devices and had to ask to be seated, sat for a while before being greeted or served. Didn't think much of the food, we were recommended by a friend the whippet inn is trying to be something it isn't, I booked this as a birthday meal for my fiance and we were left a little disappointed. There are plenty of better quality establishments around Ate o clock is one of them, The Whippet Inn is just that a pub that's trying to hard to be something it isn't, and should just stick to a gastro menu
Great food and staff. Fantastic beef.
Returning customer, excellent attention to detail, service outstanding to the amazing quality foods! Will be back.
A first visit for an anniversary dinner. We just had nibbles with a glass of wine instead if a starter. These were very tasty and original. My wife thought the Lamb Assiette was superb and my sirloin was succulent and well cooked and complemented well by the peppercorn sauce and an excellent bottle of Pinot Noir. My wife als really enjoyed the cherry brownie. Sticky Toffee pudding was OK , but not outstanding. Great staff and overall a very pleasant evening.
Starters of haddock came partially filleted. But whence has crumbled in with rice it’s a shock to then find several inch long bones.
Both the chicken and pork Sunday lunches came with no Yorkshire puddings which was strange for a Sunday lunch. But it was advertised as been accompanied with roast potatoes, carrots, creamed leeks, cauliflower cheese and gravy. However it came with the potatoes, cauliflower cheese and a bowl of cream with peas in. When questioned on the poorness of the vegetables and lack of what was listed. They then informed us they had ran out. Which was followed by the waiter asking “What was he supposed to do”.
I was ready to leave at this point but my partner wished to avoid confrontation. So we ate the mains and left. They reduced the bill to one course each. But we had gone out for a Sunday lunch with veggies not a discount bill for half the food advertised.
Although the food was tasty (had better steak elsewhere in York), the portion sizes were small especially considering the price, 5 tiny slithers of cheese for £12. We were made to feel rushed throughout the evening, taken from the bar to our table 20 minutes before the booking and asked at least 3 times if we were ready to order before the time the table was booked for. 90 minutes into the booking we were asked if we'd like to take desert in the bar as the table was only booked for 2 hours. Really don't expect to pay those prices and be rushed throughout.
Excellent steak nice atmosphere, good service. Very nice place
First class in every respect
Looked forward to something special unfortunately it wasn't steaks were disappointing
Excellent personal service and the ambience and food were second to none, would definitely recommend to anyone who visits York.
Went there ,as usual after day at York races and staff very accommodating to our 2 extra guests, despite being busy. Terrific choice of steaks and excellent wine list, matched by delightful staff and polished service. Not cheap, but still value for money .
Really enjoyed it. Shared the porterhouse steak, it was amazing. Friendly staff, attentive without being too much. Thoroughly recommend.
Beautiful food, great service and nice vibe. Have already recommended and will return. Roast dinners were superb.
Great food, great service
I went on a Monday night with my dad after a recommendation from several friends. Despite being local to York I have neglected to visit until now, and what a shame that is!
They have a lovely selection of wines, which paired nicely with the meal we had. We opted for the Malbec, which was very good - a nice surprise, as a lot of Malbec I've had in the past has only really been drinkable - I'd definitely recommend this bottle.
The restaurant was abuzz with conversation, but very much in a pleasant way. The atmosphere was balanced well between music and the ambient sounds of people enjoying themselves, which is difficult in a small restaurant and made the experience feel quaint and unassuming.
The food was perfectly prepared. I started with the trout, and the only 'negative' (I struggle to even call it that!) is that it came with quite a large portion for an appetiser. Delicious nonetheless.
We knew right away we wanted the Chateaubriand for the main course, as this is what we usually order when he and I get together, and I would say it is the best I've had thus far. It came with a range of sides and a choice of sauces, all of which were cooked well and complimented the steak very nicely. In particular I would like to give attention to the peppercorn sauce; it is very rare to find a peppercorn sauce in a restaurant that I feel is better than my own, but this was something else entirely.
The service was five star, and the staff had excellent knowledge of the menu and the drinks available. I'm uncertain of the gentleman's name, but he mentioned he was from South Africa, and he was a credit to the place.
Overall I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a fine dining experience in York. It was premium without feeling too imposing, and it's likely one of the best the city has to offer.
The food and service was outstanding. Pricey but well worth it. Best steak we've had
Excellent restaurant, delicious food and lovely atmosphere. Second meal here and would definitely come again. Well worth the 300 miles to visit the city of York and eat here. 11/10 rating!
