The Whippet Inn
Had a fabulous time. Friends birthday . She was very impressed with the restaurant.
The restaurant and food were good but the portions were small and overpriced. My asparagus starter which cost £8 was literally 3 average sized spears of asparagus. I was shocked at the size of it...for £8 I would have expected 7 or 8 pieces. |There is no excuse for serving that portion size. My burger was good and my friends said the steaks were nice but for the overall price of the meal there are many other good places to eat in York.
Disappointing visit last Thursday. Restaurant was busy and food not as tasty as previously eaten. Would not rush back.
Excellent service and table service
With Very helpful staff
One of the best roast dinners I've had for a long time. The beef was superb! My only qualm would be that there was only two little roast potatoes. I like a potato heavy meal! It was still delicious thought.
We thoroughly enjoyed our night at the Whippet. The food was excellent - much better than your average gastropub and service was very good. Minor detail, our table wasn’t quite ready at the time we had booked so we were shown to the bar for a drink first which was fine. All in all a very pleasant atmosphere and good value for money - would recommend and return.
Lovely little restaurant, excellent service and lovely food.
Had a lovely day for Father’s Day. Food was great and service was excellent. Would definitely recommend to people.
Mid week steak and bottle of wine whilst away with work. Good quality ingredients and service plus a very reasonably priced wine menu. Wide selection of local craft beers, plus excellent and friendly service. Recommended.
Great steaks, relaxed atmosphere and attentive informed service
The food was fab as always only slight criticism is my daughter has an egg and dairy allergy which I did put on the email when I booked. They were great at accommodating this and adapting the Sunday lunch but she was left with very basic dinner just plain veg. I appreciate the care over her allergies but a bit more inventiveness for special diets would be good. However wouldn't stop me coming back again have been many times. The beef was exceptional
Very goof Sunday lunch no rush no fuss good service done efficiently
We had a lovely evening, service was fabulous, food was amazing and we will definitely be going back.
Absolutely delicious, our waiter was so obliging...will definitely be back.
Another lovely evening at The Whippet Inn. The food was absolutely excellent and the environment cosy and informal.
The meal was excellent as was everything else. Our only quibble was The cheeseboard was miserly and the price was £11 which we thought was expensive!!!
The Whippet Inn is very welcoming with great service and food. The waiter could answer our questions about the menu and made recommendations of the wine list. There was a main dish that I requested as a starter and they said they could that and did - delicious giant prawns. We all had steak as main courses; 2 ribeye and 3 new york strips - they were cooked to perfection as requested. We also had nibbles whilst deciding what to have for starters and mains - the battered gherkins with sweet chilli sauce are so tasty - give them a try!
I booked the restaurant for my boyfriend’s birthday and it did not disappoint. We both had a steak and the portion sizes were huge. On arrival, we were asked if we were there for a special occasion, at the end of the meal- the waiter came through with a free truffle board with a candle in it for my boyfriend! A thoughtful touch. He also recommended places for us to go for drinks afterwards. Overall we had a lovely time.
Extremely enjoyable with very friendly staff
Steak was delicious, as were house fries. Service was very good too. Would return.
We Walt 1h30 to be served. I asked for a medium rare filet, I had a cooked one and I find it quite expensive
Lovely food, great service and affordable treat, highly recommended.
Had the Sunday Roast. Perfect! One of the best in York
Food excellent but one starter was over salted
We chose York for a very short break, and The Whippet Inn was recommended by my husband's friend. The warm welcome as we first arrived, set the scene for a wonderful evening. We were quickly sat at the table, and menus explained--drinks orders taken, and they arrive very promptly. The menu is so refreshing, yet we both chose beautiful steaks for our main course, they were cooked perfectly as were the home cooked chips and fries. My favourite asparagus was my choice of starter, and we were informed it was from the local supplier in York. They were cooked three different ways, all amazing. Presentation of all the dishes was sensational, just like the taste. The staff kept checking in, but were not over attentive--just perfect. Refill drinks were offered as soon as glasses empty, and the girls never stopped smiling. Only one yummy chocolate dessert, but they brought two spoons--so I had a taste. Heaven! The decor and atmosphere really does enhance all of the above, it was so quirky but so comfortable. Great experience, we can't wait to return.
a good meal in pleasant surroundings with great wine list
Booked at the last minute but were able to get a table in a busy little place. Service and staff was very good and would return in the future.
As usual best steaks in York. Great service and ambiance.
Second visit to the whippet Inn, the food is excellent and the staff are incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. Lovely, laid back atmosphere!!
It's a little bit faded and tatty, not so different from the pub I remember 30 years ago. We all enjoyed ourselves and the steaks two of us had were very succulent. The beer is well chosen and well kept. The service was goo, if rather slow considering only two tables ere occupied, but I guess good food doesn't come quickly. The cauliflower steak on a cauli couscous was a bit of an overload - something different as a bed would have been better. The pannacotta, to a non-dessert eater like me was a revelation.Excellent!
Very disappointed with the service and the meal. The portions were ridiculously small was still hungry. We had to go somewhere else to eat. The meal just lost on the plate also the chips what my husband had were cold.so disappointed
Booked for 4pm for Sunday lunch they rang me on the day of visit to confirm we would be coming arrived on time to be told no beef left very disappointed
Great food and service. Piped music could get a little loud.
Friendly attentive staff the food what can I say the best fillet steak I have ever had a little on the pricey side but you get what you pay for. I would recommend trying we will be back when we visit York again.
An exceptionally stylish gastro-pub. The Sunday deal on three courses was a real bargain and the service was absolutely perfect. The only thing keeping me from giving it a fifth star was the horrible desert course, an apple crumble which looked and tasted like the bottom of the kitchen bin, it was enormous and inedible.
Lush food booked a table for Easter Sunday and we're told the time we book they would be serving roast which was fine but we were a little gutted, got to the whippet inn and there gave us the menus and said we could have the roast so it made our day and it was an amazing roast dinner.
Great food Great service. Busy Easter Sunday but no problem for the well prepared staff.
Fantastic steak restaurant ever so slightly out of the main city but definitely worth the five-minute walk. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was nothing short of excellent. I would highly recommend!
3rd visit to The Whippett inn food great, gins great, service good 😊
