The Whippet Inn
The Whippet Inn’s main aim is to get the best food produce they can find in Yorkshire and then pair it with real ales, lagers, spirits and wines from around Great Britain. A fine example of this is their air dried on the bone 40 day aged Yorkshire beef from Ripon.
We are an adult dining restaurant only, as much as we love children and are raising a bunch of our own, we have decided to make this a little haven of tranquillity- a getaway for all.
There is also the option to hire the entire restaurant or restaurant and bar for private use. Ranging from bespoke menus, arrival drinks or whatever you need to make your event perfect. We are here to serve and will tailor make packages to suit your specific requirements
In here we can arrange cocktail making classes pre or post dining at very competitive rates with your own dedicated mixologist and take away recipes packs. Loved by parties for pleasure or business.
the meat meals were excellent as was the service. however the vegetarian option was inedible. they did offer to replace it and didn't charge for it but it spoils an event.
Lovely place. Food was lush and we will be returning when we can
Steak was to die for! The staff was really helpful too! Parking can be a challenge if you have the car. Not much on street parking.
Booked with no hassle an evening meal at The Whippet Inn Meal was very good and the service by Hayley was fantastic. Able to have a glass of cider with the meal was the only thing missing. ( ?? )
Fantastic food; service was exceptional and very friendly staff
As a vegetarian, the option of a dish from the main menu with the Sunday dinner vegetables seemed a good idea but this resulted in a dry meal with no offer of vegetarian gravy. However all my meat-eating friends had lovely food. The overall afternoon was very pleasant due to the good service and great company!
Been here a couple of times Ribeye was not as good as the first time, it was a bit thin and stringey, we had two mains two sweets and a couple of drinks and thought it was expensive for what we had
Food was great, I would recommend eating here but we were a little disappointed as we were sat next to a table that seemed to get far better service than us!
A very pleasant experience and great food.
Just felt a bit rushed as our table was booked out again.
Spot on again. Food excellent, service attentive and ambience great. Many thanks.
Incredible service and wonderful, tasty steak. Couldn’t finish it all as plenty of delicious side dishes came with our Chateaubriand. Really enjoyable dinner and will definitely visit again.
Amazing gin, steak, wine , friend gherkins and great service .
Great food (steaks to die for) and the service was second to none. Can not fault the waiting staff, their demeanour and attentiveness was perfect.
Great meal. Excellent service, tasty food and good atmosphere. Really enjoyed our visit.
Lovely quiet dining experience, fantastic food. Best steak I’ve had!! Enjoyed by both of us and would definitely visit again. Recommend to anyone looking for a quiet meal of amazing quality out in York.
The staff including the owner were very welcoming and friendly.
Good choice of food and drink .
We had a really good evening.
Back to its best , superb Sunday lunch , great service and well trained excellent staff , after being disappointed on our last vist a year ago we decided to give the place another try and very glad we did 10 out of 10
Amazing. Friendly staff and amazing food. We have been several times now and it’s always been excellent.
My wife and I had dinner here whilst in York for the weekend. The food was absolutely delicious, both the Hake and the Beef fillet. The starter portion that we asked to share was perhaps slightly small. The wine list was attractive and they were good pairing options for the beef. All in all would definitely return.
This was my 4th visit to the Whippet Inn and in comparison to Sunday Lunch and lunchtime specials it was not quite as good. The place was empty and lacking any atmosphere . The food was good but we had to ask for a couple of things such as side plates and serving spoons for side orders. Time for a change possibly next time in York!
Beautiful setting and ambience. Lovely warm welcome on a chilly evening. Friendly service from knowledgeable staff, delicious food and a great selection of wines to accompany it.
Great server a young guy from South Africa, steaks were fantastic and service very very good.
Very happy with everything. Small and cosy atmosphere and the staff were very attentive. We went for a Sunday lunch and it was divine but wish there had been more choices for dessert
Excellent Sunday lunch undermined by surprise on arrival that this is an adult only restaurant and our teenage niece was too young to eat there! Well, I'm no mind reader so if this is policy, it should be made clear before booking. My niece was allowed to stay but it made for an awkward moment.
We were a party of 4. Our steaks and sides were all very good - tasty and perfectly cooked. The wine was equally good. Service was attentive and friendly.
- We started with nibbles which were quite small.
- For dessert we had a chocolate mousse tart. The mousse was very good, however it was covered by a creamy meringue which was extremely sweet for our taste (all the 4 of us!). It would have been so much better with 1/3rd of that meringue or just whipped cream instead.
Excellent meal with great service. No faults or problems at all.
Went here with friends. The menu suited everyone and we had a good relaxing lunch. We will definitely go again.
Absolutely amazing experience, the staff were warm and welcoming and were very conscious of dietary requirements particularly for my rather odd allergy to oranges! They ensured every meal and drink was safe to consume which meant I felt very reassured and enjoyed the experience. The food was beautiful and the staff recommendations were well informed for everything.
Great wine . food was very good quality cooked to perfection would recommend ti anyone
Lovely service, really enjoyed it. Will definitely eat here next time we’re in York.
We had the charterbriand and was amazing the staff where friendly and very helpful loved it.
Went for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised by how good the food tasted. Would definitely recommend to friends and clients. Callum was very friendly and informative. Will return very soon.
What a great find, the food and service was excellent, the staff where very attentive
Lovely food lovely staff could do with catering at bar for NON gin lovers no cider no vodka . Partner didn’t hav a drink as non of the above 🙄 only let down
This is the third time I have eaten at the whippet and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The food was as usual extremely tasty, well presented and as a bonus we had Anna serving us which went to make the whole experience really enjoyable. This little gem of a place seems to have absolutely nailed it.
Everything was under seasoned. And blue cheese sauce was tasteless. The steak looked as though it was cooked in low heat pan. So no fat redering down and lacked colour. As a prime price things like this needs to be judged.
Amazing food, brilliant, friendly and helpful service and a great quiet location still within easy reach of the main city center. We loved having dinner here on a Saturday night so much that we went back for the Sunday Roast!
When we 1st arrived we were greeted by very welcoming staff we where early so sat in the bar to enjoy a drink. Our table was available early so shown to our table and ordered,, we decided to order the £80 sharing steak. while waiting there was a member of the waiting staff who was kneeling on the chairs speaking to other diners I also noticed when he was stood speaking to another couple he would put his hand around his back and place into his trousers this to me isn't appropriate behaviour for waiting staff. Then we watch the couple receive what looked to be a very large and well cooked steak. About 4 mins later that steak was taken from them and came to our table with an apology that it was ours. Call me fussy but for the cost I was prepared to pay I wasn't accepting it but the same waiter tried to offer me a free drink and they where trying to sort it out. I paid my bar tab and left. The next day the manager called to apologise I aired my views about the inappropriate behaviour from the 1 staff member and accepted the managers apology and the next time I'm in York I will give it another try as we all make mistakes
We visited after a recommendation. Our main course was ok but not as nice as I had expected. We were both quite disappointed with dessert, my partner ordered baclava which he said was fine but nothing special and I ordered sticky toffee pudding which was in my opinion dry and lacking in flavour. I did think it was a little over priced. the interior was a little rustic if not a bit tatty. I don’t expect to return.
Great pub with s good range of beers and spirits, a great atmosphere and excellent service and food
