The White Hart has a long history of welcoming guests and wetting whistles, and there are records of a pub in the village dating back to 1741, but that was only when the records began! The establishment has been under new management since January 2015 and offers more substantial fare to satisfy all appetites. “We’re extremely proud and grateful to have received numerous awards and nominations for our food from The Oxford Times, Bitten Oxford, OxinaBox and Wadworth Brewery,” says Baz, the current landlord. Food is always prepared on site and cooked from scratch on a daily basis, with the kitchen team – lead by head chef Andrew Carr – using local suppliers wherever possible. You can often find Wytham Woods venison on the menu and there is also a full vegan and vegetarian menu that has garnered its own awards. The White Hart can cater for all types of events too, whether it’s a wedding reception, afternoon tea or birthday party, with exclusive hire or group reservations.

  • Private party facilities

The White Hart of Wytham can cater for all types of events whether it’s an intimate family gathering, wedding reception, group afternoon tea or birthday party. Lovely setting in pretty stonebuilt village. It was a beautiful evening so we sat outside in one of the White Hart's pods, which provide a pleasantly intimate ambience. Excellent food and wine with prompt but unobtrusive service. All in all, a very enjoyable evening.

Food is wildly over priced for the quality. Vegetables and sides come separately at extra cost. Jubilee trifle was mostly synthetic tasting double cream. Very disappointing indeed. Lovely old pub but left feeling scammed.

We had a wonderful lunch in the cool stone flagged bar area on the hottest day of the year so far. Simple but wonderful local food, ingredients that sang out and the best chips we had ever had! We didn’t have room for pudding so we had it packed up to take away and ate it after an afternoon snooze. Friendly, intelligent staff. Perfect. The joy of a treat filled day off.

What a delight to find such good food, great service, positive staff and relaxing ambience at the White Hart. We will be going again and regularly. We were welcome from the moment we walked in. Staff were attentive but not pushy. Drinks came fast. Good choice of beers, spirits. Oddly no cucumber in the Hendricks - apparently they had none. Some grilled broad beans came to accompany. Wide choice on the menu. We had the radishes with almond Mayo which was a generous portion and delicious. The Scotch Egg was really excellent. Crisp on the outside, well flavoured pork meat and runny yolked egg within. The Bacon terrine with icicles radishes was well balanced and the ultra thin Melba toast perfect with in. Mains were cod in parsley sauce - a bowl of it so ask for a spoon - and grilled mackerel. The reconstituted chips are to die for. The wines weren’t as strong as the food - a slightly thin US Chardonnay and a nothing much Pinot noir.

Perfect Lunch spot after cycling from Oxford. Creative menu with really fresh seasonal ingredients at super reasonable price. Loved the shabby chic decor sitting in the covered outside area. Nice friendly waitress. It was very quiet as a midweek lunch - I recommend everyone go at this time if they can as she said it gets very busy at weekends. Look forward to re-visiting.

Stayed for one night in our campervan using the Britstops scheme. Very friendly on arrival. We chose to eat in the covered outdoor area and was pleasantly surprised to find that a jazz band was playing. They were superb. The menu choices were great and the food was excellent. All in all, a lovely evening.

Have been a couple of times since the new chef joined and absolutely love what’s happening at the White Hart - you can just tell the quality of the ingredients, so fresh and delicious. Particularly loved the asparagus, grilled lobster and the freshly fried scotch egg - stuff of dreams! The Jubilee trifle was a bit boozy even for me, but the lemon posset I had a few weeks ago was one of the best puddings I’ve ever eaten (and I have eaten a few!). Hugely recommended.

The White Hart of WythamResponded on 6 June 2022Thank you and very much appreciated by all of us. I'll suggest to our new Head Chef that he holds back a little on the Cointreau in the trifle! Best wishes Baz

My crab stater looked and tasted of “mush” My wife’s bacon “?” Starter was inedible We were the only people there, on a Bank Holiday Thursday at 8pm? Used to be a great place, what’s happened? Over £100 and my wife had no main and 1 non alcoholic beer which was room temperature Staff were very nice, but we will not return Outside “structure “ that’s covers all very ugly and ruins a great outdoor eating area Shame as we have a house near the Abbey

The White Hart of WythamResponded on 5 June 2022Dear Robert Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the crab or potted bacon that have elsewhere received very good feedback - the crab meat is delivered to us from Cornwall. We were unusually quiet that evening though there was a party in our Observatory, where many customers ask to be seated. The space has allowed the pub to survive during Covid, and spared me from bankruptcy. As a Wytham resident, have you considered the monthly disccounted dinner I provide? It's a very supportive community. Baz

The food was not good at all. I orderd the pork, but it came with so much fat, that I could eat not even half of it. It came with nothing, so I had to order a side dish. This made it very expensive too,

The White Hart of WythamResponded on 18 May 2022We do realise that our pork is not eveyone's cup of tea. It is Tamworth and comes from a local farm where animals are hand reared and where there is a very high standard of welfare. In both the belly and chop cuts there is high degree of fat that of course creates its own very distinctive flavour - and in marked contrast to cheaper pork that is widely available and often served in these times. We will be making more of an effort to explain this to our guests in the future. Best wishes Baz

Service was slow and inattentive. Menu was weird , unaccommodating and food disappointing. Ordered starter which we would have still waited for a week later if I did not put my hand up a few times to get the attention of someone . Waited 10 minutes for bill . And then another 10 for card machine . With only 4 tables occupied ? What a pity . A beautiful venue yet not what I expected .

The delivery of a jug of water when we arrived with no glasses for another 10 minutes was a harbinger of things to come. We had arrived early (12:15pm) before it was busy, had to ask for glasses, ask for other drinks, ask for menus and even ask to give our order after an unacceptable delay. Whilst it may be difficult to get experienced staff, there seemed to be plenty of them but they didn't seem to know what they should be doing ie looking after the customers! The food was OK but not as good as it used to be or what I would have expected these days. I don't think I shall be returning.

When we arrived we were put on a table squeezed into the main restaurant almost on top of a larger round table in the corner. Unfortunately the people on that tables were extremely loud with no regard for others so we asked to move. We were then moved to a conservatory type area which was really quite shoddy, near the toilets where we kept getting a whiff of drains and non-one else at all so the ambience was poor. Menu had a very limited choice and food was ok but nothing special and quite pricey. Shame as we’ve not been for a long time and we’re entertaining visitors who we wanted to give an Oxfordshire pub experience so we’re disappointed that we couldn’t. Service was however very good if a little slow - we felt out on a limb and a little forgotten from time to time. Not the pub’s fault of course that the other table was occupied by inconsiderate people who felt the need to shout rather than talk! Would not recommend and won’t be going back again for some time sadly.

The White Hart of WythamResponded on 10 May 2022Dear Sir/Madam I'm sorry that your visit to us was spolied by the behaviour of other guests and that our effort to relocate you the only other space avialable did not match up. Our menu has been limited over the last week as we set up our exciting new menus from our new Head Chef'. We're sorry to hear that your poor experience - largely as a result of other guests- has had such a reaction and we wish you well. Kind regards Baz

We were late for Sunday lunch after getting lost in Wytham Woods, but when I eventually got through on the phone staff were very friendly and happy to keep a table for our party of three. We ordered the roast lamb, and it was excellent - pink & juicy, with a delicious sauce & perfectly cooked vegetables. The rhubarb semifreddo my friends chose for dessert was also superb, as was my coffee. Service was cheerful & friendly, but very slow.

Lovely pub and lovely food. It would have been nice to have had a choice from a lunchtime menu as the à la cart menu is quite expensive for lunch. That said the food was very very good. The lamb was exceptional . I think The White Hart is like many other places at the moment. The staff are not plentiful and work extremely hard. Given the challenges that everybody is facing at the moment I think The White Hart are doing a very good job

Limited choice of food for a Sunday lunch which would have been ok but the only vegetarian roast option came with no gravy and was dry. I asked if the chef could knock up a vegetarian gravy, the waitress went to ask and came back to say that chef couldn’t and was busy. I almost volunteered to go and help make it. Food was ok but on the expensive side. Ice cream came in bowls that were warm so ice cream had half melted by the time it reached the table

I like the White Hart at Wytham, the new pods in the courtyard are wonderful, especially in warmer weather. However, Sunday lunch a few days ago was a huge disappointment. There was only red meat on offer, no chicken, or vegetarian. It was on average about £20 for the Sunday roast. We decided to go for starters and soup, and sadly, although the soup was delicious, it was cold. We enjoyed each others company, and didn't leave hungry, but I am afraid this would not be enough to recommend it....

Booked the only slot available for lunch on Saturday at 2:45. Delayed arriving to called the pub to advise, phone went to answerphone. Arrived 15min late to be told the restaurant was closed and the chef had departed. Why on earth would you allow a booking slot at 2:45 on a Saturday afternoon if you are going to close the restoration at 3pm ! Very disappointing. Went to the busy but super reliable Trout Inn instead.

The White Hart of WythamResponded on 29 March 2022Dear Ian I am very sorry that we weren't able to serve you on Saturday. We do communicate our late arrival policy with all onlne reservations and always do our very best to accommodate . Regretably, a moment always comes when we have to close for the well being of our staff. Currently we , like most UK hospitality businesses struggle to deal with staff shortages arising from Brexit and now massively compounded by the out of contol wave of Covid infections. My apologies.
