The White Hart has a long history of welcoming guests and wetting whistles, and there are records of a pub in the village dating back to 1741, but that was only when the records began! The establishment has been under new management since January 2015 and offers more substantial fare to satisfy all appetites. “We’re extremely proud and grateful to have received numerous awards and nominations for our food from The Oxford Times, Bitten Oxford, OxinaBox and Wadworth Brewery,” says Baz, the current landlord. Food is always prepared on site and cooked from scratch on a daily basis, with the kitchen team – lead by head chef Andrew Carr – using local suppliers wherever possible. You can often find Wytham Woods venison on the menu and there is also a full vegan and vegetarian menu that has garnered its own awards. The White Hart can cater for all types of events too, whether it’s a wedding reception, afternoon tea or birthday party, with exclusive hire or group reservations.

  • Private party facilities

The White Hart of Wytham can cater for all types of events whether it’s an intimate family gathering, wedding reception, group afternoon tea or birthday party. New chef (as of May 2022) so interesting new menu with some quite creative ideas in all courses. Food was well-prepared and well-presented. It tasted delicious. Service was attentive. Drinks menu was varied and reasonably priced. A little on the pricey side but OK given the quality of the food.

The food was not good at all. I orderd the pork, but it came with so much fat, that I could eat not even half of it. It came with nothing, so I had to order a side dish. This made it very expensive too,

The White Hart of WythamResponded 5 days ago

We do realise that our pork is not eveyone's cup of tea. It is Tamworth and comes from a local farm where animals are hand reared and where there is a very high standard of welfare. In both the belly and chop cuts there is high degree of fat that of course creates its own very distinctive flavour - and in marked contrast to cheaper pork that is widely available and often served in these times. We will be making more of an effort to explain this to our guests in the future. Best wishes Baz

The White Hart at Wytham is such a lovely pub. They have a wonderful new chef, with an emphasis on local, sustainable food. And that lemon posset with prunes & suet sable, was gorgeous. For the avoidance of doubt the previous chef was also wonderful. Onwards, upwards!

Service was slow and inattentive. Menu was weird , unaccommodating and food disappointing. Ordered starter which we would have still waited for a week later if I did not put my hand up a few times to get the attention of someone . Waited 10 minutes for bill . And then another 10 for card machine . With only 4 tables occupied ? What a pity . A beautiful venue yet not what I expected .

The delivery of a jug of water when we arrived with no glasses for another 10 minutes was a harbinger of things to come. We had arrived early (12:15pm) before it was busy, had to ask for glasses, ask for other drinks, ask for menus and even ask to give our order after an unacceptable delay. Whilst it may be difficult to get experienced staff, there seemed to be plenty of them but they didn't seem to know what they should be doing ie looking after the customers! The food was OK but not as good as it used to be or what I would have expected these days. I don't think I shall be returning.

When we arrived we were put on a table squeezed into the main restaurant almost on top of a larger round table in the corner. Unfortunately the people on that tables were extremely loud with no regard for others so we asked to move. We were then moved to a conservatory type area which was really quite shoddy, near the toilets where we kept getting a whiff of drains and non-one else at all so the ambience was poor. Menu had a very limited choice and food was ok but nothing special and quite pricey. Shame as we’ve not been for a long time and we’re entertaining visitors who we wanted to give an Oxfordshire pub experience so we’re disappointed that we couldn’t. Service was however very good if a little slow - we felt out on a limb and a little forgotten from time to time. Not the pub’s fault of course that the other table was occupied by inconsiderate people who felt the need to shout rather than talk! Would not recommend and won’t be going back again for some time sadly.

Dear Sir/Madam I'm sorry that your visit to us was spolied by the behaviour of other guests and that our effort to relocate you the only other space avialable did not match up. Our menu has been limited over the last week as we set up our exciting new menus from our new Head Chef'. We're sorry to hear that your poor experience - largely as a result of other guests- has had such a reaction and we wish you well. Kind regards Baz

We were late for Sunday lunch after getting lost in Wytham Woods, but when I eventually got through on the phone staff were very friendly and happy to keep a table for our party of three. We ordered the roast lamb, and it was excellent - pink & juicy, with a delicious sauce & perfectly cooked vegetables. The rhubarb semifreddo my friends chose for dessert was also superb, as was my coffee. Service was cheerful & friendly, but very slow.

Lovely pub and lovely food. It would have been nice to have had a choice from a lunchtime menu as the à la cart menu is quite expensive for lunch. That said the food was very very good. The lamb was exceptional . I think The White Hart is like many other places at the moment. The staff are not plentiful and work extremely hard. Given the challenges that everybody is facing at the moment I think The White Hart are doing a very good job

Have always liked the White Hart and I was born in Wolvercote so it’s lovely to go back there. Staff friendly and checking on us. Didn’t have to wait long for the food which was very tasty. We will definitely be back.

Limited choice of food for a Sunday lunch which would have been ok but the only vegetarian roast option came with no gravy and was dry. I asked if the chef could knock up a vegetarian gravy, the waitress went to ask and came back to say that chef couldn’t and was busy. I almost volunteered to go and help make it. Food was ok but on the expensive side. Ice cream came in bowls that were warm so ice cream had half melted by the time it reached the table

I like the White Hart at Wytham, the new pods in the courtyard are wonderful, especially in warmer weather. However, Sunday lunch a few days ago was a huge disappointment. There was only red meat on offer, no chicken, or vegetarian. It was on average about £20 for the Sunday roast. We decided to go for starters and soup, and sadly, although the soup was delicious, it was cold. We enjoyed each others company, and didn't leave hungry, but I am afraid this would not be enough to recommend it....

Booked the only slot available for lunch on Saturday at 2:45. Delayed arriving to called the pub to advise, phone went to answerphone. Arrived 15min late to be told the restaurant was closed and the chef had departed. Why on earth would you allow a booking slot at 2:45 on a Saturday afternoon if you are going to close the restoration at 3pm ! Very disappointing. Went to the busy but super reliable Trout Inn instead.

Thank you for this, and my sincere apologies . We, like all hospitality businesses, are in the midst of very challenging times at the moment. Shortage of staff, we have to close 2 days a week, and the current - Covid wave of infections - has exacerbated staff problems . We also are getting multiple booking cancellations often at the last minute . We do our very best to manage these issues ,even resorting to cancelling reservations ourselves. I'm sorry we let you down on this occasion. Baz

The food was outstandingly good… our visiting friend said it was the best Sunday Roast he’d ever had which is a serious compliment from a 50 year old Brit! The service wasn’t great, asked for some ketchup (not for the roast!) which never came and we would have had another round of drinks but didn’t manage to order. They seemed understaffed which I know is a common problem at the moment and it certainly didn’t ruin the experience. The banging back door got a little irritating as it was quite loud and constant but again, wouldn’t stop us returning for the fab food! Will be returning and would highly recommend if you like food food in a cosy setting.

Mussels good, though I think onion could be simmered longer and more garlic could be used. The two starters our guest chose looked beautiful and so did her semi-freddo. Good Chadlington bitter. Music seems unnecessary. Comforting fire for those who had been out in the storm.

Superb food and beautiful friendly pub - the staff and service exemplary. The burger was delicious, the batter fish huge and the chicken succulent and bathed in a wonderful jus. High end food with very generous portions, wished I lived in the village of Wytham so I could lunch there every day.

This is a great restaurant but like many others has faced its fair share of challenges. We must all continue to support our local independent restaurants through these difficult times and be patient as they adapt to very difficult circumstances.

We went here for the first time on Valentine's Day. Parking was good, lots of spaces. It has a garden. It's in a pretty village. The food was very tasty and cooked well. We chose from the a la carte. There was a fire and it was cosy and friendly. The lady who served us was prompt and polite and helpful with menu details. All in all a very good experience and we will be going there again.

Excellent food. Service a little slow and disorganised but fine as we were not in a rush. Lovely location and ambiance.

We went for Sunday lunch with my elderly mother. We were sat in the conservatory section of the pub which was quite cold but there was a heater which took the edge off the chill. My mother found it tricky to get up onto the high bench seat but once up was comfortable enough. Service was fine. The Sunday roast was really excellent with generous servings of delicious vegetables. Very good sticky toffee pudding to follow- really nicely done, especially the addition of honeycomb crunch and butterscotch sauce. Yum!

Sat freezing in the draughty lean- to w only a portable heater for warmth; ( the wood burner wasn’t lit) rain pouring down the dirty corregated plastic roof. Our view was of forlorn plastic dining pods with their narrow little benches - all unoccupied. Service was slap dash . We had to keep asking for sauces, even knives in order to eat the cheese or spoons for the soup and sauces when we eventually got them. Despite a succession of waiting staff, one or other of the seven of us was kept waiting for the food or drink, their order forgotten. I asked what the three cheeses were on the cheese board. The waitress didn’t know, guessed one might be “ some sort of Brie” and didn’t offer to find out for me. There is a training need here and communication about dishes on the menu. However, the food was totally wonderful! Sunday roasts w huge Yorkshire puddings, crispy fish and triple fried chunky chips to die for; a brilliant special of Cornish fish stew . The chef is wasted at this establishment all his/ her good work undermined by poor service. If you go, ask to be seated in one of the warm small dining rooms. ( and take some cutlery in your bag to be on the safe side!) We booked three weeks in advance as family members were coming fr far and wide. ( inc Cheshire) Oh and don’t bother to say if it’s a special occasion. It was my husbands birthday - I’d hoped for a candle in the ice cream but nothing- so why ask! Will we go back? Jurys out. The food was SO good but the experience so poor.

This is an attractive pub with an interesting menu which largely disappointed. For eg the beef on the bone for 2 was chewy and fatty. The scotch egg starter was small. The fish was beautifully presented but boring. The burgers were ok. They had run out of all puddings except for ice cream which was disappointing for our grandchildren. No one asked for any feed back.

The food was well presented, good size portions and tasted excellent! The thick cut chips were a tour de force and were the best I have ever had! I am a chip fanatic! The White Hart is a lovely place to dine or have a drink, full of old world charm with an old world hearty welcome! Wonderful destination to while away the hours with good food and good drink!

          • Catering

You can hire the entire restaurant exclusively or enquire to make a group reservation. The White Hart of Wytham can accommodate up to 80 for seated dining.
