What a quirky, cosy, lovely pub. Perfect for a wet and windy day. The staff were pleasant; relaxed atmosphere and the food incredible. No faults at all. First time visiting and already recommended it to locals.
Fantastic from start to finish, stay overnight and had best breakfast ever. Very helpful and polite staff
Service good, food well presented and tasty. Some unusual options on the menu which made it a bit different.
Service was awful...waitresses walking around looking but not looking what was needed to be done...waited 25mins after finishing dinner not one person came to clear plates..so got up and paid at the bar
We had a lovely evening with excellent food and great ambience. The only issue was that we waited a long time for our order to be taken, and two of the main course options were no longer available.
Great Saturday lunch, good thing we booked as the restaurant was full
A picturesque and charming restaurant with impeccable food and friendly and attentive service. Downside is that it is very large, as well as hugely popular (rightly so), and the background noise level, with hard floors, can be uncomfortably high when five people are attempting to communicate across a round table.
Had lovely lunch here with my Aunt. Shared some Whitebait, both had Fish and Chips. Food very good for both. Despite not being very busy was a little hard to gain attention between waitress visits, but very friendly.
I hope that the overcharging error with my bill was a genuine mistake. I'll certainly be checking my bill very carefully in future.
table reservation was made online. The table was set with cutlery and 3 water glasses. our drinks and food order was taken but at no time was a jug of water offered. All other tables had water on the tables. After the main course plates were cleared, no desert menu was offered. The waitress was asked for desert menus and went to get them. She did not return. I eventually went to the bar, collected menus and eventually attracted the waitress's attention and our order was placed. The total order for 3 drinks, 3 main courses and 3 deserts took over 2 hours to complete. The restaurant was busy, but not overly so. Only 3 staff were serving, this is clearly not enought for a Saturday night. Not the place to go if you're in a hurry.
Lovely place to stay - we stayed 2 nights and we thoroughly enjoyed our meal - would definitely recommend it
First time back in about 20 years and since it changed names from The Cottage Inn.
Sat outside in the garden as we had the dog, who was brought iced water and really fussed over by the staff.
Food was nice, Sunday lunch, good amount of it and it was tasty. Toffee Apple desert was a bit odd (no toffee...) but altogether we had a nice time sat in the sun, with good fun and drink.
Will be going back.
Nice place food was very nice and good value
Lovely quiet ambience, good food with generous portions and all at a reasonable cost. Very much enjoyed by all in our party who have expressed a wish to return at a later date.
My son and I are trying various Upham group restaurants. There have been mixed reviews so far! The Winning Post was great. A lovely place - we ate inside, having asked to be seated by a window. Might have eaten outside had we been before as it looked nice. We both loved the sharing platter to start. My fish was lovely. Although the new potatoes felt a touch too firm to start with, they were actually fine. My son really enjoyed his lamb, which was a great improvement on a previous Upham lamb. He had the frozen yogurt dessert and raved about it. I had a scoop each of mango and raspberry sorbet which was delicious, very fruity and a good end to the meal. The service was excellent from start to finish.
Fab staff and great food in a wonderful setting
Well worth a visit if you want a nice meal in an Old English pub setting. The food is tasty and well presented. The bar and outside seating area is very popular, but the restaurant area is nicely secluded.
Service was not as good as previous visits which was disappointing since it was very quiet
Pitta breads served with humus as a starter were cold - typically breads are served warm
Main course of battered tempura aubergine was tasteless and greasy
Service was good, staff friendly. Had the chateaubriand which was very nice. The starters were ok, nothing jumped out for us on the menu. The desert menu is just pretty much ice creams, could do with pudding choices such as cheese cake or brownie etc
An excellent evening meal - our choice of venue for Dad’s day and Wife’s birthday dinner treat.
Service was excellent throughout and Emma delightful and attentive - thank you Emma.
We will definitively be a returning client.
Food very good and quality and value for money equally sound.
Loved it here! Really good food, reasonable price, lovely pub :)
This is a lovely pub but the food wasn’t good. We’ve been on other occasions for lunch and the food has been good. But today, for dinner, it wasn’t. I ordered steak that was purportedly aged. It was a gnarly mess and tough and far more chewy than it should have been. Pudding, which was recommended to us (sticky toffee) was dry and chalky. Maybe they had an off night. Service was friendly and attentive and the ambiance is lovely. Hard to know if we’ll return since the food didn’t live up to standard and there are plenty of other countryside gastropubs in the area. Nice for a drink if nothing else.
Wonderful meal, excellent service. The Lemon Sole was perfectly cooked and presented and our Sticky Toffee Pudding was one of the best we have had. Good wine list and the house wines by the glass are very good.
Would definitely recommend this delightful restaurant. Excellent Sunday lunch, a choice of roasts and trimmings. Very helpful and pleasant staff, a great find.
Let down by poor service and waiting staffrolling their eyes at customer requests
I don't want to say to many good thing otherwise it will become too popular and we'll have to book weeks in advance.
This is a gem of a pub/restaurant, the food is excellent, ambiance is just right, the services is friendly and efficient and its not over priced, second visit and no disappointment, thank you to the waitress and the amazing chief.
Excellent food, poor service. Inattentive and amateurish
Nice friendly relaxed atmosphere with good food . The service was very good .
Excellent food !
Cauliflower cheese was excellent.
Think they were short staff as had to ask for souses to go with food and we asked for more gravy and never got 🙁
But overall great roast dinner 👍
I chose the Winning Post to celebrate my birthday because I wanted an intimate place with good food and that's exactly what I got. We were put in their private function room which is charming. The service was just right - not too intrusive, but enough so that we never ran out of Prosecco ... The food was perfect - good gastro pub food, beautifully presented and well cooked. We were not in the main pub restaurant, but that would also have been fine - it's a beautiful old building with a great ambience.
The staff were friendly and welcoming and the pub itself is lovely inside. It is quite lively in the bar area, but not in an obnoxious way, just full of people out for a Saturday night having fun. I can highly recommend the Winning Post to anyone wanting great food, at reasonable prices, in a lovely setting. Or, even just a drink in a pretty location.
Thanks to everyone for helping me celebrate my milestone birthday. We'll definitely come back.
Had a lovely lunch here with my mum, a nice overnight stay after the royal windsor horse show and a nice breakfast. Service was very attentive but relaxed at the same time. Definitely recommend
Fantastic food, never disappointed! Brilliant and friendly staff.
Food wasn’t as good as previously. The gin cured salmon left an unpleasant aftertaste and the chicken liver parfait profiteroles were overcomplicated and didn’t quite deliver (v cold in centre). The cod for main course wasn’t as fresh as it could be (not bright white as it should be) but the prawns and mash were delicious. The chicken Kiev went down very well. There was a huge table in and so was quite noisy. Ended up having to go to bar to pay our bill on way out as staff just disappeared. Not sure we would come back which is a pity as it’s very local to us. Staff didn’t ask us how each course was or we would’ve told them- equally didn’t want to ruin our night by complaining. We paid in full. Hopefully this comment is helpful to the chefs.
Excellent staff really helpful managed to seat 22 of us at short notice and the delicious meals arrived all together! Lovely surroundings
Everyone tried to make it good, but the attention to detail was missing. No management guidance and it lacked ambience as there were only two other tables in the restaurant.
Food was good, but not special.
Pleasant and not to be written off, but does not set itself higher than any of the other options in the area. Would return knowing the limitations.
I have had the pleasure of eating here several times and have been impressed on every occasion. This was no different. Love it!
Great well presented food and lovely friendly service
arrived and table that was allocated we were unable to sit at because of location, as a pillar was in the way so you had to sit almost at corner of table. asked to be moved, and was moved to a more comfortable table so settled down only to be moved again because waitress had placed us at a table that was booked but didn't know so third time lucky. food was of mixed quality, skate wing lovely, burger tasteless. dessert chocolate tart nice, pannacotta had a heavy 6mm hard skin. waitress just said sorry no offer of discount. will go again and give it one more try as could just have been a one off. evendently had new young staff in kitchen
The menu was not seasonal and the attitude of the staff was surprisingly snotty particularly of one slender girl with blonde hair.
It was a special birthday occasion but we do not intend to go back as the meal and service has gone down hill remarakably.
