The Withies Inn
Located in the tiny hamlet of Compton in Surrey, The Withies Inn dates from the 16th century, and has been unobtrusively modernised to accommodate a small, first-class restaurant. Attractive low beams and an eclectic interior add to an atmosphere which is relaxed, informal and individual. When weather permits an attractive Pergola allows meals to be eaten out of doors in the delightful garden. Compton itself lies directly on the historic Pilgrims' Way, possessing a church with a rare two-storey chancel, and a picture gallery devoted to the works of Victorian painter G F Watts. The Withies Inn stands in unspoiled country on Compton common, just below the Hog's Back, and on the edge of Loseley Park and it's charming Elizabethan Manor House. Very well-known and mentioned in many discriminating reference books, The Withies Inn is extremely popular. A warm welcome awaits you.
Lovely as always
We have been coming to the Withies for years and years, and the ambience is always wonderful. The setting is beautiful and the service outstanding. However, this time the treacle tart was not up to the usual standard. AND very sad to see Suckling pig is no longer on the menu, when did you take it off?? I had planned to have it, it was my birthday lunch with my family.
Hi as good as when we started visiting 20 years ago.
The added accommodations are lovely, we thoroughly enjoyed the Hayloft room.
Breakfast was as good as dinner, and the special dessert they prepared for us was yummy
A delicious buffet in a quintessentially British pub
We were a group of architects looking for lunch close to The Watts Gallery whilst on tour. The staff at the Withies were easy to talk to and we booked the function room in advance. I would thoroughly recommend the finger buffet which was simply delicious. It fact, we took the remains of the lemon cake home. Excellent quality food with great taste. You could tell that it was all homemade. The seating was a little difficult as it was largely fixed pews, but the staff made up for it by bringing round the platters so that we didn't have to climb over each other. I'd say that anyone over 5ft 6in should be warned about the low timber beams. However, this is what you would expect from a quintessentially British pub. I'd highly recommend this pub and will definitely return.
I ordered a sirloin beef salad. There as absolutely no dressing on the salad and I wasn't offered any. I had to ask my colleague to pass me his peppercorn sauce he had with his ribs he ordered. The starter was nice, so was the pudding but the main was a big disappointment to me.
Two of my foreign colleagues booked to stay 2 nights at The Withies, and we ate dinner there one night during their stay. The staff are excellent and very attentive. I can vouch for the moules and the liver, which were both perfect. The portion sizes were generous. I couldn't manage a dessert, though my guests could. Overall the meal for 4 came to about £40 per head, and I think that is very reasonable. We did not drink alcohol as that is against our employer's strict travel policy, but the wine choices were good and the prices in the region of £30 to £40 per bottle.
The setting is comfortable and relaxing. Beware of the low ceilings if you are tall, but the atmosphere is warm and comforting, with adequate light. It is perfect for relaxed dining. The seating in the dining area is close, so you may want more privacy if discussing confidential matters or if you just aren't feeling sociable.
I should also mention that my colleagues were very impressed with the accommodation too, and commented several times on how polite and really helpful the staff were. Apparently the breakfast is really good and the rooms were spotless.
I would recommend The Withies as a place to eat and as a place to stay.
Stayed here during the week with my husband, the food and service was excellent. Would recommend.
Excellent location with lots of character although the church like seats/benches were uncomfortable and, despite the staff being friendly, efficient and polite, they were clearly over worked so there was no-one at the bar for a period when we arrived and less interest in our table than an exceptional restaurant would provide. The food arrived in good time though, was brilliant, and we will return :-)
This was my first visit to The Withes Inn having lived in Guildford for 30 years!, but it was always highly recommended by others. So I took my sister there for Saturday lunch and it was not to disappoint. Very old character building with low beams and period furniture. A warm welcome by the staff and my table preference catered for. A real English style food menu and who could turn down the Steak, Kidney & Mushroom Pie!, I don't often say that was the best I've ever had, but it was!, rich and dark, no fat, plenty of kidney and a light pastry topping, all served elegantly by the waiter from the bowl to plate (nice touch!). The meals my guests also chose were excellent too.
Then to the sweets, although something I do not often have, but with Rice Pudding & Strawberry Conserve on the menu, the decision was made. Absolutely delicious!. Reasonably priced, friendly staff and very pleasant surroundings. Highly recommend. Thank you.
A special occasion - and we were treated royally. Just what was needed and the great personal service was a bonus!
Have been meaning to visit for ages as recommended to us. Lovely old pub, very friendly staff.
Although service was slow it was nice to see waiting staff taking pride in doing a good job. Food was excellent & very filling.
Cant wait to return
The Withies is well known in the area and is consistently good in every respect. The ambience, both inside and outside, is outstanding and the Inn is welcoming in all seasons. Arguably some of the waiting staff are a touch over-familiar but this is an observation rather than a criticism. It is one of our favourite pubs which we have frequented for over 50 years.
Excellent ! The food , service and ambience are second to none . Beautiful setting and plenty of parking . The lady who served us had been there for over 30 yrs and is always so charming and helpful , as are the other members of staff .
Will definitely be visiting again as we had moved out of the area and not been for some years .
A beautiful restaurant in a beautiful location. Starters and main courses were served in a reasonable time. Food was very good.
We sat for a good 15 to 20 minutes expecting to be offered the desert menu but wasn’t. At this point we decided not to wait any longer so paid the bill.
They missed out on a further £50 in desserts and coffees.
We both had a superb meal in very nice country olde worlde pub surroundings (a pleasant change from all these pared down wood floor and cowskin interiors so fashionable these days) and the outside ivy clad booths in the garden are delightful. The menu had a retro touch with Steak Diane and tournedos Rossini on offer I chose the specials Gazpacho ( best I’ve eaten outside of Spain) followed by Grouse and it was a real treat served with ‘Withies Crispies’ rosemary and Parmesan roasties and beautifully cooked vegetables. Service was impeccable and there is an extensive wine list - we will be returning
I went there last Saturday and enjoyed the ambience. However the food didnt live up to my expectations. I ordered mussels and chips. The chips were soggy as if they were cooked long time ago. The restaurant took money off the bill for them but I was disappointed. Hopefully it was just one off occasion.
Very disappointed with the food. Charged almost £10 for a prawn cocktail, the portion size was small & the prawns even smaller and tasteless.
The chips tasted like mcCain’s oven chips and the chocolate mousse sat on a bed of sponge fingers!!! Yuk!
Such a shame to be let down by the good as the staff were amazing.
There is no e-mail address on the website to make a complaint.
Safe to say we won’t be returning.
I went with 2 friends on a beautiful day. We sat in a booth in the shade and really enjoyed our stay. The food was excellent especially the crab salad which was absolutely fresh and served with homemade mayonnaise, we would also strongly recommend the goat cheese tart. Our waitress was very efficient, helpful and delightful. Thank you all for making this a special lunch time.
Excellent location and food, service also excellent. There was a group of 10 of us and they looked after us really well
Wonderful meal and service as always. Nothing is ever too much trouble. That’s why we keep coming back as often as we can.
We enjoyed a very nice lunch in the restaurant and the food was well presented and very good. The walkway between the tables is quite narrow and one person with a "man bag" slung over his shoulder nearly nearly knocked over my glass of wine. The only other downside was that as the restaurant got busier so the service deteriorated a little and the pot of tea for wife was forgotten until a gentle reminder was given. Overall a lovely setting, an excellent kitchen and an enjoyable experience.
Always a lovely welcome from the cheery staff. Generous food portions. Swift service. Great to sit in one of the shady garden booths.
Goats cheese tart starter was a burnt pastry case with some poorly caremelised onions in the bottom and a whole wheel of goats cheese sat on top.
Main course was roast beef salad- for £18.50 I was expecting a pretty spectacular salad. It was not. The roast beef was laid on one side of the plate, on the other were a few lettuce leaves, a couple of cherry tomatoes and a radish. Very disappointing. Presentation was very poor and the salad was minimal.
My husband had a bread and butter pudding for dessert which was dry and tasteless.
The pin is beautiful and the staff are friendly and attentive but the food is really very poor given the high cost.
We sat in the garden which was beautiful. The menus was slightly different but the staff tried to accommodate an old favorite off the old menu too. The service was outstanding.
We had booked a restaurant table but my friend was sitting outside when I arrived and we were treated to a table cloth for our wooden table. Service was good and my whitebait excellent. Chic mousse desert also good.
No more to say.
Very nice food very nice pub very nice restaurant. And very nice staff will be going again very soon mick
The tartar sauce on my whitebait was rather short of capers. My steak pie was overcooked and a little dry.
Poor food quality, presentation and value for money
Will not return
This is a real olde-worldy type pub and very delightful. Staff are attentive, food is traditional pub grub with a few up-market add-ons like calves liver & bacon and veal escallope. Outside there are tables set within individual ivy clad pergolas - charming!
Haven't been to The Withies for a couple of years - and its still just as lovely as it always was. Pepe was back working when we visited although he retired 5 years ago and its a delight to be served by him. Lovely food, beautiful setting, really a great place as it always was.
Always a Good Restaurant to eat at. No exception this time. Excellent quality food and well looked after. Would recommend
Everything delicious. No problem asking if OK to share a starter. In fact they went one step further and divided our garlic prawns into two individual dishes! Know the ‘boys’ liver & bacon went down well, the beef stroganoff was apparently delicious and my salmon was excellent. Only criticism was not enough choice of veggies to go with my salmon. Minted peas to go with the minted baby potatoes would have been perfect. Do not have a sweet tooth and a dessert a year at Xmas is going some....... apple pie was to die for.....says it all really.
Great meal, very friendly attentive but not intrusive service. More specials would help.
As always, my visit to The Withies was enjoyable from the warm welcome to the excellent food and the unobtrusive service. My guests loved the ambience and the range of dishes on the extensive menu.
Great location and good food
Such a lovely Inn and service so attentive
Great place. Good old style English Pub/restaurant and service.
Superb service and food in a wonderful setting that made our big day very special
Have been going there since I was 18 years Old and am now 71, the staff, the ambience and the food is exceptional
