The Withies Inn
Located in the tiny hamlet of Compton in Surrey, The Withies Inn dates from the 16th century, and has been unobtrusively modernised to accommodate a small, first-class restaurant. Attractive low beams and an eclectic interior add to an atmosphere which is relaxed, informal and individual. When weather permits an attractive Pergola allows meals to be eaten out of doors in the delightful garden. Compton itself lies directly on the historic Pilgrims' Way, possessing a church with a rare two-storey chancel, and a picture gallery devoted to the works of Victorian painter G F Watts. The Withies Inn stands in unspoiled country on Compton common, just below the Hog's Back, and on the edge of Loseley Park and it's charming Elizabethan Manor House. Very well-known and mentioned in many discriminating reference books, The Withies Inn is extremely popular. A warm welcome awaits you.
Having not eaten here for a couple of years, I was delighted to experience that nothing had changed! This remains the most characterful, friendly establishment with excellent personal service, first-class food and a huge amount of charm.
Great quality ingredients, perfectly cooked in character environment.
The Withies remains an inviting venue with first class service and vey good food, which has a long tradition and which it has retained admirably. It made a dinner to celebrate an 80th birthday a most enjoyable occasion.
Friendly welcoming staff who did not rush you. Food was excellent although slightly leaning towards the pricey side but none the less it will not stop me from going back. Lovely atmosphere and very cosy with a log fire burning.
The venue itself is lovely but the food is way over priced. The service was slow and the waiters were scruffy.
Absolutely amazing as always. ..... no need to say anymore.
Works Christmas dinner
Fantastic dining experience, brilliant service very friendly would highly recommend excellent value for money.
Lunch with my wife for her birthday. We had booked which was just as well because it was busy but, the food & service was excellent in a very cosy atmosphere. A very enjoyable experience.
Service & food excellent as always...car parking a problem, something I have not experienced before, is it possible that people who are not patrons of the Restaurant are using the car park walkers etc ?
Otherwise excellent lunch
Fantastic experience. Great food, great service, cosy atmosphere.
We often go to the Withies if we want a really good meal, in an environment where we can catch up with fmaily and friends in a relaxed environment. Love the menu, great pub environment and the service is just excellent.
Lovely food, great service, very interesting retro menu, no complaints at all, we will be back.
As always, a perfect dining experience. Fabulous food and friendly staff.
Fantastic food, great atmosphere and friendly staff
We have used the Withies for over 50yrs, the service remains excellent but the cooking does not justify the high prices. Ther medium/rare steak tasted fine but was medium the chips were standard fare. I could get this quality food at half the price.
Regretably farewell Withies
We enjoyed a lovely meal.
The food was perfectly cooked and beautifully presented.
The service was excellent.
Lunch took nearly three hours despite us getting there at 12.15pm.
Great food and atmosphere. Lovely, extensive wine list. Super service!
Beautiful place and very friendly service but quite a wait for food despite not being too busy when we arrived.
The Withies is a very atmospheric inn with a cosy environment. We would like to have given the service 5 stars as initially it very much was. However, after the main rush of serving was past, it seemed that several staff had a break and we then waited rather a long while to be served coffee, and another long wait for the bill. It rather took the edge off an excellent evening. The food was very good although vegetarians and vegans don't have much to chose from.
Great service, very nice waiters , the pub brilliant. The one thing that spoils it, is the pricing.
Some of the meals don’t come with veg etc, do you end up paying extra.
The quality of the food is excellent, & would go more often if it wasn’t for the price.
Keep up the good work, as it’s hard to find a very good pub in Surrey still going.
We had a super lunch - as always. The food is always good but it was also served quickly and efficiently which, given how busy they were, was an outstanding performance.
We have already booked our next lunch!
A brilliant pub with great food and service, don’t miss this great place.
Lovely as always
The Inn itself is beautiful, sadly, what you Expect is not what you get. You expect something special to go with the beautiful surroundings of a 16th century pub, but alas we were disappointed. The food was “okay” nothing special and not worth the expense. The Withies has so much going for it, they need a rethink of the menu, bring the menu into the 21st century at least!
Food was excellent, beautiful oldie worldie pub and the waitress was lovely, treated us like we were regulars. I can see why the landlord has kept her there for 34yrs!! We'll try a Sunday lunch next.
The Withies always delivers. The food and service is very good. The venue is exactly what you expect from an old established Inn. Hard to fault!
Great local pub, excellent service and I really love the setting and ambiance.
Old fashioned, rather than olde worlde. Dates menu and decor appealing only to an old clientele. A shame.
food and service could not be faulted, will be back for sure.
Perfect family dinner - trip down memory lane on the menu. Can not fault anything
Lovely as always
We have been coming to the Withies for years and years, and the ambience is always wonderful. The setting is beautiful and the service outstanding. However, this time the treacle tart was not up to the usual standard. AND very sad to see Suckling pig is no longer on the menu, when did you take it off?? I had planned to have it, it was my birthday lunch with my family.
Hi as good as when we started visiting 20 years ago.
The added accommodations are lovely, we thoroughly enjoyed the Hayloft room.
Breakfast was as good as dinner, and the special dessert they prepared for us was yummy
Lovely old school Surrey inn. Just needs Christopher Plumber and Susannah York in RAF uniform and a red 1938 Rover MG parked outside. Lovely staff, log fire in the winter, traditional food, timeless.
A delicious buffet in a quintessentially British pub
We were a group of architects looking for lunch close to The Watts Gallery whilst on tour. The staff at the Withies were easy to talk to and we booked the function room in advance. I would thoroughly recommend the finger buffet which was simply delicious. It fact, we took the remains of the lemon cake home. Excellent quality food with great taste. You could tell that it was all homemade. The seating was a little difficult as it was largely fixed pews, but the staff made up for it by bringing round the platters so that we didn't have to climb over each other. I'd say that anyone over 5ft 6in should be warned about the low timber beams. However, this is what you would expect from a quintessentially British pub. I'd highly recommend this pub and will definitely return.
I ordered a sirloin beef salad. There as absolutely no dressing on the salad and I wasn't offered any. I had to ask my colleague to pass me his peppercorn sauce he had with his ribs he ordered. The starter was nice, so was the pudding but the main was a big disappointment to me.
Two of my foreign colleagues booked to stay 2 nights at The Withies, and we ate dinner there one night during their stay. The staff are excellent and very attentive. I can vouch for the moules and the liver, which were both perfect. The portion sizes were generous. I couldn't manage a dessert, though my guests could. Overall the meal for 4 came to about £40 per head, and I think that is very reasonable. We did not drink alcohol as that is against our employer's strict travel policy, but the wine choices were good and the prices in the region of £30 to £40 per bottle.
The setting is comfortable and relaxing. Beware of the low ceilings if you are tall, but the atmosphere is warm and comforting, with adequate light. It is perfect for relaxed dining. The seating in the dining area is close, so you may want more privacy if discussing confidential matters or if you just aren't feeling sociable.
I should also mention that my colleagues were very impressed with the accommodation too, and commented several times on how polite and really helpful the staff were. Apparently the breakfast is really good and the rooms were spotless.
I would recommend The Withies as a place to eat and as a place to stay.
Stayed here during the week with my husband, the food and service was excellent. Would recommend.
