My review would have been 5 star but for a couple of small issues. The a la carte menu choice was very limited, 3 starters and 3 mains, one more of each would have been better, although I accept that there was veggie menu as well. The service was very good but a little slow and fussy. The bar is a very under utilised part of the restaurant, and it appeared that few people choose to use it, we were the only people in there. The service was very slow we had to push for the barman to take our order, plenty of staff but all a bit too young and chatty with each other, and it would have been nice to have been given the menus in the bar to make our choices. The food was however exceptional, small portions but exquisitely presented and beautifully cooked, and enough to make you want a dessert, which was also superb. We will definitely be back, maybe to try one of the ‘event’ type offers. Try it, its well worth a visit.

I absolutely love this place. We had our wedding reception here 8years ago when it was Darceys! So pleased Phil Thompson has kept it the same beautiful atmosphere, if not made it slightly better!
The food is amazing, staff are friendly and professional.
Love the menu choices.
Will definitely recommend it to friends.

Date night four-course tasting menu (plus pre-starter/amuse bouche and pre-dessert). I switched the starter option, because I loathe goats cheese, for a stuffed courgette flower, which was superb. Husband had the goats cheese which he found balanced perfectly with the beetroot. Every course was delicious - even the ones I wouldn't necessarily have chosen if dining a la carte - and could not fault the service whatsoever. A charming, good humoured service.
One minor gripe ... the background music. They need to get the system sorted. Loud and crackly at times as they attempted to rectify it. No music better than loud crackles any day. But that really is minor and should not put anyone off going to Thompsons.

Six stars for the food if that were allowed. We had the seven course tasting menu and every course was absolutely delicious. We also had the flight of wines chosen by Thompson. Just one flight between the two of us - that was plenty. The choice of wines was oddball; some dishes were really fruity and the wine did not match; one or two wines just did not go with the food at all, in our opinions. Next time we shall choose our own. Service was efficient and friendly but the waiters were rather lacking in knowledge, especially of the wines. I asked for a quiet corner which they were unable to provide as the conservatory was occupied by a large party. The noise level was just acceptable. I would recommend the restaurant highly, but suggest you choose your own wine!

Really nice anniversary lunch - the staff made it very special for us with thoughtful touches which were appreciated. There's no separate bar so we were shown straight to our table which felt rushed however we couldnt fault the unobtrusive service. Its quite small in the main downstairs restaurant but the tables are well spaced to allow for chatting and the music (type and level) was just right. The set menus are good value though the drinks are quite expensive as are the extra vegetables so these bump up the final bill substantially. I liked the choice of menus though so there is something to suit all budgets.

Decor is ok - if a little shabby in places - the padlocked entrance door from the street is not welcoming and we werent actually sure if the restaurant was open or not! The window into the kitchen adds nothing as inside it looked rather messy! The idea of a chef's table and view into the kitchen is meant to be reassuring to diners and to showcase its standards but here it detracted. It looks out of place in such a small local restaurant and so came across as a little pretentious. More fitting in a Michelin restaurant. If you are going to do it, the kitchen, the chefs and their methods have to look absolutely immaculate and they didn't sadly. We were the last ones to leave the lunch service and heard some rather strong language coming from the kitchen - probably high jinks as it was end of service but I would rather not have heard it.

Overall, the food was delicious which the "experience" didnt quite live up to. It felt like something is slightly missing and I get the sense that this restaurant's identity is a little confused - ie if it is trying to be 'high end', then the overall experience is let down by poor decor in certain areas (kitchen view and foyer in particular) and, for instance, little details like low quality/quantity bread/butter. If its trying to be a good quality local restaurant then it doesn't need the pretentious elements.

Only one part of the service bothered me. I had ordered a bottle of wine. My glass was filled up too often. only after I had had one sip In the end I said when I would like a drop more. Other than that enjoyable as ever.

Both the food quality and service were excellent and beyond expectation. The tasting menu booked through open table was great value and the staff were very accommodating in recommending alternatives for a couple of the food dishes I couldn’t eat as I’m pregnant. I’d highly recommend Thompson’s and we look forward to returning again soon. Thank you!

Another great meal at this restaurant. We enjoyed the a la carte menu and sampled the paired wines which complemented the food perfectly. Our favourite was the beef, cooked medium rare with a delightful and flavoursome Malbec. Well worth a visit and great valve with helpful and friendly staff.

Over priced, very small portions, food nothing special, no ambience. Considering money we paid, no member staff even opened door for us when leaving. Sat down at 7.20 and took 2 hours for the 5 taster menu to be completed - I understand they are cooking from fresh but the portions are thumb sized so shouldn't take long, by end of it, I was more hungry than when I went in.

We had a lovely meal for our wedding anniversary. The staff were very accommodating, switching one of the courses on the set menu for a different dish as I am pregnant and couldn't eat the pate. The beef and duck we had for main courses were both superb, particularly the beef shin. My favourite dish, however, was the cod - cooked to perfection with wonderful flavour combinations, it was absolutely fabulous!

This was our first time at Thompson but it will not be our last. The 7 course tasting menu was superb and nicely balanced. The portion sizes were sensible and we we felt just right. One minor criticism is that I had the accompanying wine flight and found that a different glass of white for each starter course was over the top, one or two glasses of perhaps a higher quality white would have suited me better. But overall the restaurant made our anniversary celebration special.

For the price we expected it to be exceptional service, outstanding food and a memorable experience....but it was just 'OK' really. The staff really tried but it didn't really happen...we had to ask for a refill of our glasses 3 times from our bottle that wasn't at our table, the waiter poured red wine into a glass with white wine in it, we caught the bar man signalling to a colleague to keep an eye on us at the bar, but not in 'good service' way but in a suspicious way! I don't think we looked that dodgy!

I have just had a superb Sunday lunch with 2 friends. We had outstanding food and service, I cannot remember ever having had better! Duck confit pithivier, roast chicken breast, summer vegetables, roast potatoes for me, all cooked perfectly; friends had slow roast beef, and hake, which they said were also delicious; we all had roast apricots/sorbet/chantilly cream for dessert - outstanding. I’ll definitely be back!!

Generally pretty good especially the quality of the food just a bit disappointed with a few of the extras that would have made the evening live up to expectations.

We went for the date night menu that included the glass of champagne but the champagne was warm (hadn’t been chilled properly) and then had wine suggestions to accompany the menu and the red wines recommended hadn’t been prepared/ allowed to breathe so we’re a little bit disappointing.

As said earlier food was very good, just need to sharpen up a bit on the extras to match the expectations and prices being charged.

A most enjoyable meal. Food process are very reasonable, but drinks over priced. The atmosphere in the top level of the restaurant is not as ambient as in the lower level. I had specifically asked for a round table by the window. This was not provided, which was a little disappointing as i had gone to the effort of asking and it was a very special occasion.

Very tasty food and would go again.

Service was polite but food took a bit too long to come out - particularly dessert which would most likely have been made beforehand and especially as they were not very busy.

Presentation of food on huge plates looked a bit contrived (trying too hard to be michelin style) and secondly, it tricks the mind into thinking you are still hungry despite reasonable portions! Dessert especially looked tiny and a tiny looking dessert =disappointment. No-one wants a tiny looking dessert!!

Despite the points above (which can be improved), the food was exquisite and is worth a visit.
