Toby Cottage Restaurant
Our visit for a birthday celebration was very enjoyable . The staff were friendly, helpful and very entertaining and the menu was excellent. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. Well done everyone!
We will be back!
Lovely everything. Monday night so a bit quiet but excellent experience
Always very attentive staff
This is simply one of my favourites! Humorous staff, simple fare done excellently. Keep up the good work !
Charming and friendly service in a traditional setting to have a homely dishes. Desert trolley is a must - I hope they will do a dessert buffet in the future, we’ll be back with a heart beat.
Fantastic food and service as always.
Very nice dinner at Toby Cottage. Best restaurant in Ripley !
Super Sunday lunch
We are always made welcome
Very good value
A hidden treasure, with returning clients Im not surprised in the least. My first visit in some years away from the county. The food exceptional, service ditto attentive with out hovering..Keen eyes keep your wine glass charged. The staff are professional with traditional flare and a great sence of fun, making the visit a night to remember.. 5 stars dont do this place a justice.. GO... highly recommended the wine list is better than a lot of London top resturants .. nothing is to much trouble for this amazing establishment.. Guys we will be back ..told our friends too..
As always, excellent in every respect. Food second to none, service likewise. Can thoroughly recommend to those who want a meal at a reasonable served by friendly and courteous waiters.
Delicious food served in the traditional style with entertaining banter with the staff
Quirky little family run restaurant with great traditional European food and fun staff.
This is a comfortable and cosy restaurant that provides few culinary surprises but executes everything well. Portions are generous and service is friendly. Nice little cocktail bar upstairs for your pre-drink.
Food and service was amazing faultless .
Waiters were attentive whity and professional which is very rare to find these days. A tad expensive but the whole evening experience was well worth it .
We will be going back for my birthday celebrations again next year .
We hadn't been to this restaurant for several years. While the ambiance is pleasant, neither the waiters, the menu nor the quality of food has changed in that time. The daily lunch menu is promising but the reality was more cafe than restaurant. The whitebait was chewy, the haddock bland and the liver leathery. The pudding trolley looked great but was cholesterol on wheels. The overall impression was of an establishment settled into a comfortable groove and unlikely to change.
Fabulous meet and greet, food, ambience. Best meal out in the UK I have had in a long time, on all levels.
Could not fault the genuine, friendly (often very humorous) and warm service from all the staff we interacted with. They are a superb team. We took my father-in-law for Sunday lunch on the occasion of my wife's birthday. He has mobility issues and they were ready on arrival with a short ramp to gain access inside the restaurant - excellent planning ahead and kind with it. We wanted a glass of bubbly and they brought a bottle to the table without further delay - I was slightly nervous thinking I hadn't given a price range but it was the cheapest - and delicious to boot - on offer. I LOVE restaurants when it is clear they know it's just never worth trying it on with a customer; it made the whole experience so wonderfully enjoyable as a result (the same happened with asking for a particular grape in a bottle of red later - again, great taste and excellent value offered). The food was lovely - sardines, cannelloni and chicken liver pate were all great starters. Sunday roast was delicious - crackling on the pork and excellent sirloin of beef. Yorkshire puds were nice but not totally crispy (unlike the potatoes which were sublime). Lovely veg too. Puddings fair to very good. We will definitely be going back. An absolute blast of a success - our children raved about everything too. The bill was less than initially anticipated - so much so it was no pain to add a further 50% to the (very reasonable) service charge - they deserved every penny for the memorable lunch out for several years.
Been many times before. Just this time the food wasn’t anything to boast about. Just average and when the prices are as they are you can’t afford to ever have just average.
Lunch for three on saturday. Very helpful and friendly staff. Good choice of food and wine. Easy parking. Would recommend.
What a brilliant find. The food is so very good - traditional English food brought up to to date without the fad di daddies! All our food was cooked perfectly and to our taste: scallops wrapped in bacon - seafood pancake - duck à l'orange - tournedos Rossini - fillet steak - great selection of seasonal vegetables. And the staff are a laugh as well, constantly making sure we are ok. A really good family restaurant with food you will remember!
Time warp. Was almost expecting Basil Fawlty to run out but not the case. Old rather cramped Tudor barn style with lots of waiters that have probably been there for years. I didn't think it was very cheap considering it's in the middle of nowhere, but a very traditional seventies style in what might be called a Taverna. Menu seemed to be seafood orientated. There's a multi tiered cake trolley that continuously being wheeled around, not something you see any more.
We booked for a Saturday evening meal. Very cozy and welcoming place. Great food and staff are all very friendly. Not cheap but a good, well established restaurant.
Have not visited for some time but even better than we remember - obviously not alone thinking this because it was absolutely FULL.
Deffo need to book - what are you waiting for...??!!
An enjoyable evening with good food and wines. However, disappointed by the well-worn carpets and general decor which definitely need attention.
We have a lovely meal for our anniversary - will definitely go back
We booked for 6 people for my daughter`s birthday. We had a fantastic evening, we went up to the first floor to the bar which was cozy for pre-dinner drinks. The staff were so friendly and funny and made us feel welcome, loved the banter. We had lobster thermidor which was delicious, the liver was cooked to perfection, in fact all the food was very good and came on time, we didn`t have to wait. My husband loved his starter, the seafood pancake. The Alborino white and Cune Rioja red wine were excellent, the wine list extensive. The desert trolley, what can I say! Would go back in a heartbeat! Just what you want for a great evening out!
WE rediscovered Toby after years of living further away and it was easy to recall how it was a favourite in the past and to see how little it had changed and how well the standards had been maintained. We shall certainly be back in the near future.
Excellent. Faultless. Food was fantastic and the service was impeccable.
Excellent old school restaurant. I can't believe it's taken me so long to return there. Well worth the wait. Price side was not cheap, but food quality and service were superb
This is a charming quirky old fashion restaurant with outstanding customer service. We were early for our table but were warmly welcomed and taken for drinks in a comfortable seating area. The service was quick and our food served promptly. All the waiters were chatty and friendly joking with us.
The food was delicious particularly the beef cannelloni. There was an amazing old fashion desert trolley.
An excellent night was had by all.
Beef Wellington and Dover Sole particularly delicious
And they have air conditioning !
A very pleasant evening. The staff were extremely friendly and good fun even if they were a little OTT.
Food was excellent although rather large portions for older people. However, we were offered a smaller meal when we return which was very nice. See you soon.
A la carte menu quite expensive but Sunday lunch menu good value and quite delicious. Courteous, speedy, silver service. Waiter particularly warm, efficient and helpful. Very good wine list.
As others have already said, great food and fabulous service. Worth picking from the specials of the day.
Unable to fault.
Drinks in upstairs bar, small and cosy, where food order is taken, and then shown to table when food is ready. Just like good restaurants used to be. The best Italians running the show, so the whole operation is friendly and professional.
Will definitely be going back. We live locally, I can't believe it's taken us so long to find Toby Cottage.
like a time warp - even have their own dessert trolley. Food was excellent, supported by good old fashioned service - friendly, witty and attentive.
Enjoyed a superb 3 course meal at the Toby Cottage ,food was amazing & service very good.
It was good to enjoy a pre-drink in the cosy bar upstairs . We had visited this restaurant a few years ago & still as good as ever. Looking forward to returning soon.
I’ll admit I am a regular here. There’s a reason - we’ve never had a bad experience at the Toby. Always check out the special dishes and settle in with one of their excellent wines.
Lovely place for a special occasion. A little too pricy for everyday eating. Super food and service.
Delicious food, had a great beef wellington. Very friendly staff but a bit of an odd atmosphere
Excellent food and excellent service.
