Metro at Apex Grassmarket
Food good, service excellent and friendly. The ambience of the restaurant was good and it was easy to converse with our fellow diners.
Noted on booking surprise birthday placed at very rear of restaurant beside cutlery alcove. Requested plain burgers was not noted cheese and tomato toastie had no tomato when asked for vinegar was given metal dish with vinegar???? Absolutely no atmosphere
Very good two course meal (including a glass of house wine) from a set menu for £15.
Good choice on menu and a nice touch to have a jug of water on the table when we arrived.
For some reason our main course took a while to come with a number of later diners served before us. Not a major problem - we were on holiday - but perhaps staff should have noticed sooner.
Overall though we enjoyed the meal very much.
Arrived early, advised server we were early, restaurant was empty, told they were ‘ very pushed at the moment could we come back in 15 minutes, there were probably 20 empty tables. When we came back 45 minutes later all bar one of the tables were still empty. We were seated , not asked if we wanted a to order a drink. About 10 minutes later we still hadn’t been asked if we wanted s drink or whether we were ready to order yet there were 3 servers stood chatting at the checkout. I had to save at them to get someone to come and take out order. We ordered and the starter arrived probably in 10 minutes time safely it was before our drink from the bar. All the courses arrived quite quickly , food was nice but in my opinion nothing more than average, was just expecting something more unusual and there weren’t a great deal of choice on the menu. In summary didn’t think service was great, food was ok . We wouldn’t return.
The restaurant was almost empty, what surprised us because all other good restaurants where we tried to dinner before were full and could not accept us without booking. The service was poor and slow. Besides, two waiters came to take our orders, but even so, the bread delayed a lot to appear. The food was good, but that was all. When we left the two waiters came separately with the card machines. One of them did not know how to manage it. Bad experience, indeed.
Very slow service, wrong food served and no time to recook
Lovely staff, gorgeous food.
I would recommend during the festival period as it is in a convenient location.
The food was good, but wouldn’t recommend if you are looking for something special. We were disappointed to be told only residents qualify for the 2 courses for £15 offer. However, it doesn’t say that on their website and we have had this before, during the festival. So I’m not sure what is right.
The fixed price menu only available to residents which was not made clear on the Web site.
The deconstructed bruschetta was very poor both in presentation, taste and price.
Rest of the meal was OK.
Lovely food, menu and setting. The service was friendly and they were trying very hard but there just weren’t enough staff.
For a restaurant attached to a hotel, it was very good. You may lose some individuality but the service was very efficient and friendly. The food was tasty and portion size adequate and we would recommend.
Nice value in Old Town/Grassmarket. Got the 3-course dinner for 20£, which is rare in this area. Though the burger was a bit dry, the fish and chips passed the test and the salmon app was sizable and yummy. The sticky toffee pudding beats the pecan treacle tart ;) Service was attentive. Would come again for the value and the views on Grassmarket!
This is in the Apex hotel. It has a modern setting but full glass windows looking out on a classic street making for good people watching.
We had the pre fix menu meals and they were really good. The Haggis starter and haddock starters were very tasty. I had the flank steak and my wife had the chicken. All prepared very well.
The chocolate pot cake dessert was a nice finish.
All and all a good night out.
We are on a vacation to Scotland. It was our first meal on the day of arrival. We were happy to have a meal without leaving the hotel. Plus it was pouring rain. The Metro is modern feeling and appropriate and affordable for any size family. They offer a value meal, two choices for 15 pounds plus a small glass of house wine, if you so desire. We had two delicious breakfasts there. The pancakes were my best ever. They also have a small upstairs area where we saw a family sit with small children so they would not disrupt the rest of the diners. The staff was very friendly. Nice place.
A phenomenal meal. Brilliant presentation and wonderfully prepared food
Value for money, the meals arrive quickly and are hot and if you have a window seat there is a great view of the castle.
Poor service. I had bought a dinner, bed and breakfast package for my self and three children. The waitress argued with me that my deal meant the children eat free from the kids menu, she wouldn't listen or check my reservation to prove we were all to eat from the main menu. On leaving she apologised as she had made a mistake and given the children the wrong choice. This meant I had over paid for the stay as the kids eat free any way, also as I didn't have the extra budget to buy meals from the main menu the children missed out on what should have been a fancy dinner (they called it ). Very embarrassing as the waitress kept repeating the word free all this in ear shot of other diners.
Reviews posted on open table did not reflect our experience. Food was subpar, service was horrible, and selection was half what the menu suggested. By the time we had received our first drink the meal was already there. Just wanted to get out of the restaurant once we sat down.
My wife had eaten here before approximately 12 years ago and had an amazing meal, now many years later we found ourselves In Edinburgh with our now grown up daughters and looking for somewhere to eat, this came up and we remembered the stunning views over the castle and decided to give it a whirl.
On arrival we were greeted and seated, we elected for cocktails to start and then ordered from the two course menu, two had the haddock and I had the flatiron steak, our youngest went for the burger., the portions were very generous, the food was delicious, truly we have eaten in many fine establishments but this was in the top 1% .
The desserts too were awesome, I had the simple vanilla ice cream, roasted almonds and coated in a chocolate sauce and it was simply divine.
This service was attentive , the cocktails awesome and the good divine.
A very underrated gem in Edinburgh, give it a try I doubt you will be disappointed
Lovely little bistro looking onto the vibrant Grassmarket. Not too ordinary, not too fancy, just right.
Great food and the set menu is very good value for money.
We went on valentines night and they provided us with a free glass of wine each.
Nice location with a great view of the Castle, very nice food with great service. They are very accomodating for providing vegan options even though they are not specifically noted on the menu.
Excellent food and service , would highly recommend the restaurant
Cibo buono. Servizio attento.
When I went I had a prize voucher which was a 3 course meal for 2 and a bottle of wine, as I am not a wine drinker I asked if there wa a possibility we could get drinks to he equivalent amount of the bottle, they were extremely accommodating with this request. The service was also very quick and staff were lovely
Food was very good with great selection of dishes. Staff were lovely and extremely helpful. Would certainly recommend this place to friends.
Lovely food and in a vibrant part of the City, service was quick which helped as we were off to the Tattoo after - which was brilliantly close also.
Very good food, the sweet potato and chickpea cassoulet was really tasty. Staff very friendly and attentive,
Disappointing experience! Waiters had no idea what they were doing - turned a relaxing evening to one that we just wished to end!!
A lovely view and very friendly service, the food was excellent with good choice
Great service really good food
The selection of the food was excellent. Amazing dishes where one taste complemented another. Very approachable and friendly staff happy to help with recommendations. Over all nice relaxed restaurant. Thank you for a great night!
We went for dinner on the last night of our stay in Edinburgh. The food and service was superb, highly recommended.
Lovely meal, very well presented. Staff great, good service. Well done, will be back.
Our experience was brilliant, with helpful staff and very good cuisine. This was our wedding meal and we truly can't fault it. Excellent!
Modern decor highlights the very contemporary menu. Each course was presented beautifully and tasted even better that it looked. Our server was attentive but unobtrusive. Small wine list with very reasonable pricing. We loved it!
Love the sharing side went with husband had 4 meals to share then sweets food hot and good service would go back
We thought that the meal was a mish mash of many kinds of cuisine but they did not always go well together.
in edinburgh for the day from preston had seen tony singh on tv so gave the restaurant a try would recommend it very good
Like Tony Singh himself, the menu is slightly off the wall. Think fusion on speed with food from India, Argentina, USA, Korea, Cambodia, Peru, Scotland and Bangkok. It's more a sharing menu, have a couple of dishes each. Good size portions, not tiny Tapas size.
Located on the Grassmarket, a lively pub area below the rear of the castle, its a great place to people watch.
I'm a big fan of Tony's since his brilliant Oloroso days - but I was left underwhelmed. Nothing bad at all, just not great.
