Treacle Bar and Kitchen
The menu is prepared with the same quirky spirit and many of the traditional Scottish recipes are presented with a modern twist. Vietnamese-style sandwiches, rice noodles and salads with barbecued prawns showcase an innovative interpretation of age-old recipes. The menu also includes an assortment of vegan dishes, and the dessert menu includes baked-to-order items that taste delicious. A glass of wine or one of the restaurant’s original cocktails provide a perfect accompaniment.
Unfortunately I am sorry to write that our starter was mediocre and both our mains diabolical. My pad Thai was just a big lump of stodgy noodles with tasteless chicken. Neither of us could eat our main course. I very rarely criticise a meal.
Private party in from 6.30pm but not told of this when booking, we were rushed out of the restaurant at 6.30pm. There was no fish and chips on the menu, one starter had to be returned as it was cold our main meal was rushed and we didn’t have any time to order a dessert. The food was very bland. After we paid the bill reluctantly in cash, we Were then accused of underpaying. The waitress was asked to recount the cash found it to be correct and did apologise. This was our third visit to this restaurant and I am afraid our last.
Great service and huge food portions. Lively and friendly
Interesting (and tasty) menu choices and excellent friendly and very efficient service - would definitely go back
Was recommended by my son. Welcome was great, seating nicely spread out, place was warm. Drinks order taken as we looked at menu. Food was excellent! Warm plates nicely presented and very tasty! We will go back!
Food great for those with dietry requirements. A very enjoyable atmosphere and lovely staff!
Music a bit too loud for a bar, couldn’t really chat without shouting at each other but apart from that, the staff were super friendly, cocktails were fab and prices not bad either.
Great place, lovely food and wine and brilliant service.
Love this place. Great food great cocktails great location
It was impossible to get served. It felt like the staff were actively ignoring us. It took over 30 minutes to get a drink each at the table and then another 20 before we were able to order food. The place was not at full capacity and there were staff members just chatting so it wasn’t even a case of being busy.
Food and drinks were delicious
Absolutely fantastic place! Great food, excellent service definitely be back:)
Good food at a good price. Would go back again. Really friendly service
Treacle Bar and Kitchen is a very hip and cool space with great food, nice drinks and very lovely staff. Highly recommended!
Had a lovely meal and enjoyed a good selection of the cocktails, all served to us efficiently by a lovely waitress with a lovely manner. We had the sharing basket for starters which was a delicious variety. The laksa and katsu were next, for mains, again most enjoyable. The cocktails were fabulous, the ambiance was great, music good. All in all most enjoyable pre-theatre experience. Very handy for getting to the Playhouse on time. Would highly recommend.
Food was either not hot enough or bland. Service was really slow and inattentive considering how quiet it was.
Largely good food coconut chicken and crying tiger beef was lovely. Small menu for choice but the range would suit most tastes and has GF for those that wish. pretty loud music which is a shame when you actually would like to converse as you eat.
On a busy Saturday afternoon, I was able to book (at 1.40pm), a table for 2.30pm. We got there and our table was reserved and ready for us. Service very attentive and quick. Drinks delicious - cocktail prices average for Edinburgh (£7-8). Food very tasty - Coconut Chicken especially. Good experience generally.
Great casual vibe and simple but tempting menu. Well presented and served - a pleasure to visits, will be back.
We booked a table for drinks for a Saturday night and the staff were amazing. Even though they were busy and missing a couple of staff members, they were so attentive and friendly. The cocktails were great too, lots of choice.
Food and cocktails were delicious, but service was very slow. I appreciate that it was really busy, but it was a Saturday evening and that should have been expected. We waited easily 15 minutes for condiments to be brought to go with the meal, and only got them after we got up and asked for them again at the bar. We also waited a long time for our drinks, service seemed to be prioritising people sitting at the bar. We also got brought an incorrect main course - this was taken off the bill and the staff were very apologetic but it is very annoying to have chosen a specific meal and be brought something different. The music was also incredibly loud. I don't know if I'm just getting old, but I felt it was too loud to comfortably sit through while having a meal, we couldn't hear people talking around the same table. If we had been eating late at night in a bar I maybe would have expected that but it was before 6pm so would have preferred a slightly quieter soundtrack.
All this being said, the food and cocktails were all delicious and I would go back but maybe in a different context or on a week night when it was not so busy.
Didn't have our booking so we were turned away, even though I had email confirmation of the booking and showed this to staff. Not good when you're heading out for dinner on a Saturday evening with friends and then have to trapse around in the rain trying to find somewhere that can cater for you .
Nice staff. Nice cocktails and reasonable.
Went there for brunch with a friend. It's a lovely place. The food was great. Would go back again.
Have been to treacle a few times previously and had a nice experience but this time was different. Staff were generally friendly and the place has a nice vibe but I was shocked when I ordered a £9 cocktail and it came in the smallest champagne glass I’m sure previously when I have been here the glasses where much larger and for £9/£10 you would expect so. My partner and I both had burgers which were tasteless and far to much salt on our chips. Overall not a great experience has definitely put me off returning.
Staff too busy chatting to take our order. Had to go tk the bar to ask them to take it. Food was ok but not worth the cost.
The food took over an hour to arrive because it wasn’t ordered in error despite the bar being extremely quiet. Once it arrived it was really disappointing however it may have been due to being rushed after the mistake of forgetting to make the order. On a positive the cocktails were delicious
