Excellent food, tartare and rolls were very tasty
Amazing food really great to sit up on the stools and watch the chef in action! Word of warning - the mixed tempura is enormous !
Great food. Ambience was too dark for where we sat. A few bulbs were out at the time. But overall, great! Would come back again
Food was delicious but we were reminded every 15 minutes at what time we were supposed to leave. The service really was a shame as otherwise it would have been a restaurant I would gladly come back. For £150 for 2 people (in a restaurant with plenty of empty tables), I thought it was a real shame.
Good place to spend an evening. Good food to share between friends
Very pleasant ambiance and tasty flavoursome food. Will definitely return.
Delicious food and cocktails made even better by 20% off food offer. However the restaurant was nowhere near full and yet service was both neglectful and slow. I would go again as food was great.
Beautiful food, with a great, vibrant vibe and super friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommend :)
Really nice food, a little bit pricey but would definitely go back!
The place is great. A lovely mix between a great Japanese food experience and a pub. Have been there several times but this time ( Saturday evening) the music was too loud and it made it hard to have a conversation.
Good restaurant in a beautiful area but minimal portion of food and low ratio quality/price
Nice vibe very good music and service pretty good! Food yammi as usual
Great venue with innovative dishes presented amazingly well. Lovely cocktails too and they sometimes have live music. All in all a great place.
The food was good. The ambience was too crowded and noisy. And the service in itself was perfectly okay but there was an unfortunate accident when a server dangerously holding a tray containing full beer bottles between and over the heads of the guests tipped the tray causing all the contents of the beer to flood over my husbands head, eyes, jacket, chair, trousers, sweater and chair blinding him for about two minutes. He had to go away to wash himself, his clothing and re-adjust himself. Apart from the fact that what happened was dangerous we are not people who look for deals out of accidents. We didn’t ask for anything, but all we were offered in return was cancellation of the drinks bill which was in any case very small.
I have eaten once before and it was good enough for me to decide that it's worth coming back. Big mistake. Sushi was the worst I have ever eaten, rice was undercooked and glue-like, it was too embarrassing to spit it out so I had to swallow it. Crab salad! Imitation crab meat/seafood stick salad. I have checked menu online and there's no such salad but i can assure this was on a menu. Great location and the venue looks lovely but i won't be returning.
One of my favourite restaurants, great for sushi and cooked japanese delicacies
fab cocktails and great atmosphere
Thanks to Alison?! Delightful French waitress. Amazing food and superbe cocktail. Second visit and I look forward for the next one.
Great food... I lived in Japan so understand and appreciate quality sushi so I’m quite critical where sushi is concerned and it was super delicious.
Staff could have been more tentative on the table as had to request for service a few times but saying that our waiter was new and being trained so no biggie!
No 20%discount was given as stated in offer even after asking but they did tolorate my 2.5yr old son who was very tired and irritable so I salute them and would love to go again without my son...
Music was a nice touch and great crowd.
Parents in town. Highly recommended!
Ukai was absolutely brilliant we had lovely food and the cocktails were also very refreshing. Would definitely come back.
All great .
Fantastic armosphere, excellent sushi, all to be relaxed and satisfied.
Gonna be back very soon to replay the experience
Food was amazing and quick. Black cod gyoza we’re out of this world. But the place was empty so we may have been lucky on service. As we left it was filling up.
Only downsides were the strange music mix - edm, House, jazz and classical in about 15 minutes! And they sat a family of four next to us despite the restaurant being entirely empty. Bit awkward. But other than that £60 for a lot of food and a drink each was good value for the quality
One of the most beautiful place in London, the food is soo fresh, tasty and looks amazing
Just try and you will understand
Overall very nice but it was quiet loud with the music in the background and conversations got difficult
It’s not my first time here.. I love this place.. The food and the atmosphere is the best
Such a good vibe and great food!! Excellent service
Fake Japanese. Awful. Only for trendies who don’t know their food. Pathetic service. They don’t have a clue what they are serving and don’t care.
Good food and service but ambience lacking and location of restaurant not great (wrong side of a great street).
Second time at Ukai and this was a much more relaxed event! No live music this time which was a relief so it was much calmer and quieter. The food as always was absolutely perfect - 10/10. So fresh, delicious and full of flavour. Service was a little slow but friendly. I want to keep coming back here but I am always nervous they will have some live band drowning the place in noise! The food is worth the risk though....
Service was perhaps the worst we have encountered for several years. We came here for our Anniversary:
1) Did not even ask about our reservation even though OpenTable said the restaurant was fully booked - it was not.
2) We did not expect a free bottle of champagne, we did not expect free anything, but we did expect something special at least especially when paying a certain amount for a meal. We received neither.
3) We had to repeatedly ask for a bottle of water, we could see our food on the pass waiting whilst the waitresses simply chatted away. The bottle of water came eventually after 25 minutes after asking 5 times, no time management and they just seemed rude and uninterested. After saying thank you when they brought something to the table, they did not even look at us, slammed the plate down - walked off to go back to their chat.
4) We received the first course before the bottle of wine (we ordered a bottle within 5 minutes after we sat down at our table and food after about 15 minutes.
5) When asking for a bottle of wine, we received a glass and an additional bottle of wine, we got charged for both.
6) First time at the restaurant, when asking for some recommendations, was told I dont know anything. Did not send anyone else to talk to us.
Noted: Food was actually good. Order of plates should have been better and they stuck us on a 6 person table for 2 people but the food was good.
Ukai is a Notting Hill neighbourhood gem, with its own delicious twist on several kinds of Japanese food (try the steamed soft shell crab buns) and excellent service. I have dined there on two evenings, with vastly different experiences. The first time was very pleasant; the second evening was so noisy that I literally could not hear my dinner companion sitting across from me at a small table for two. Two women and a man were sitting in a corner banquette, and the two women were engaged in a heated argument, complete with curses and sobbing, and were making no attempt to keep it private. The man told the women that they were making nuisances of themselves (I know because I, like everyone else in the room, could hear every word the three were saying), and then the women directed their fury at him. The man left the restaurant after which the two women resumed their argument. Finally the two women completed their asinine behaviour and left the restaurant, and pleasant normalcy in the dining room was restored. I realise that it is difficult for restaurant management to interfere with or criticise customer behaviour, but if these customers had been drunk, management would undoubtedly have taken action to get them to leave. As it was, retaurant staff only occasionally stared at the offending trio and shot each other unbelieving looks and eye rolls. The only real problem with Ukai is with some of its customers.
Initially UKAI appears to be a very loud buzzy gastropub when you walk in. However once directed to our table on the restaurant side, there is a much more intimate dining area.
The menu has the perfect amount of choice with some very unique offerings including classics such as black cod but then also twists on the familiar such as pan fried wagyu beef gyoza and incredible sushi options as well as many hot cooked dishes. Everything is geared for sharing which was ideal between 4 of us.
However throughout the course of our meal it became quickly apparent that while close attention had been paid to the culinary details, customer service and attention from the waiting staff was almost zero. I’m not sure whether this is because there is a system where multiple waiters are assigned per table. But each time we asked for something they redirected us to another person. We had to ask 4 different people for tap water. This continues throughout the meal. Additionally, I have certain dietary requirements that most restaurants are able to accommodate and pay special attention to. I asked how the black cod dumplings were cooked as I was assured that they were steamed. As I have an allergy to oil I have to check but was happy that I could order this dish. However, when it arrived it was immediately obvious that they had been pan-fried and had oils bubbles on them. When we finally got the waitress (20 minutes later) I told her that they were fried and she then proceeded to argue that they weren’t and that they were just cooked in a non-oil sauce. My husband then had to physically demonstrate the amount of oil on the dumplings by touching them and showing her the grease. It was only then that she offered to check what could be done. Another 10 mins later she returned saying that they couldn’t be steamed. She did offer us another dish instead but it was a shame seeing as we would have ordered differently had we known in the first place.
The rest of the food was top notch!
Delicious!! Especially the JFC! Great cocktails too. Can’t wait to go back
Disappointing food, dragon roll is drenched in mayo and the fish isn’t good quality
We had a lovely meal at UKAI, the food was very good! We went on a Saturday evening however and there was some loud music on (live and not live), but it was really load, it was a little bit uncomfortable because of that when dinning, particularly hard on a date or if you like talking!
Awful place. Would not recommend. Japanese food done very badly. My wife’s sushi had a fish bone which was a first. All the food was tasteless and very bland. Very disappointing.
Love Ukai. One of my favourite places to go to at the weekend. Great drinks, awesome food and good music. I usually start off here before heading out on the town. Can’t recommend it enough.
Super all around
Thank you so much for making my birthday so special! the service was outstanding, and us being a very demanding and big table, we felt very well cared for. A candle and a song was a nice bonus! Thank you again!
Think bar more than restaurant, and you might be happier than I was. Very loud, first with the live music (a fine, if not particularly interesting, cover band), then with the recorded music after they went off. Had to raise your voice to have a conversation, which, again, could be OK if that's what you're expecting.
Service was very poor. Not rude, but completely inattentive. Thirty minutes after being seated, nobody had even asked if I wanted a drink. Eventually flagged down a server, and things got moving, but no visit during the meal and more effort required to pay. The tables around us didn't seem to be doing any better. Wasn't very busy either.
At least the food was pretty good, particularly miso aubergine and tempura prawns.
