The food cannot be faulted. Came quickly reflecting its freshness & the flavours were unreal! My first Japanese food experience did not disappoint. Unfortunately what did disappoint was the music - the combination of a club setting and restaurant is just simply not complementary. I really would not recommend going on a Saturday or any live music day if you were hoping to enjoy the company of who you came with. Such a shame because it would have been 5/5 if Ukai were more considerate to the people eating dinner and kept the music at a sociable level (it was good music too!).
I love the food here BUT the restaurant is just way too noisy. We dined here for the second time in 2 months hoping that the second visit would be better than the first but on arrival there was a live band playing and the 6 of us found ourselves shouting at each other across our table to be heard. Definitely not a place for older people :) We will not go back again which is a shame as the food is really excellent.
Good food, great venue, service sometimes a bit slow but it was a busy night.
Great atmosphere, very quick service. Food was amazing, definitely coming back. Recommend the salmon ceviche tacos
Very good food and service. I bit slightly over priced but overall satisfying. I would go back.
Nice food, Cocktails and service.
Very buzzy, noisy fun atmosphere. Live DJ provided music backdrop but her mixes I suspect pleased her more than the diners. Service was stressed but efficient. The Japanese menu was extensive and the food was both tasty and well presented and delivered without too much of a wait but without any finesse or grace.
Will try again but maybe not on a Saturday night 2 weeks before Christmas
Great place. Food amazing, cocktails yum and lovey atmosphere. Band were great too. Overall highly recommend.
Always spend Saturday afternoons here when we stay in London after spending couple of hours looking for bargains in Portobello Road. Live music absolutely terrific!
We've been told that we could stay for 1 and a half hours only. There were 6 of us. We had not been informed about that rule at booking. What a horrible treatment. I would like to complain about it to supervisory authorities
As always- fabulous evening! Love the atmosphere, music, food, my favourite local!!
The food at Ukai is excellent however we were a bit disappointed with the service. Our table was not ready when we arrived and we were asked to wait at the bar area. We were finally shown to our table at about 750pm. At 920, we were informed that our table was needed for another group and we were asked to pay and then move somewhere else. Unfortunately, the group were shown to their table while we were still sat down trying to settle the final bill. The servers at Ukai did not offer the same respect or courtesy to our group as we did to the group who were late to vacate for us. Instead we had a group of hostile diners peering over us while we paid as though we had caused a problem. Not cool at all especially as we had enjoyed the food and were celebrating a birthday.
It was supposed to be a birthday dinner with a few of my friends, but myself and my friends weren’t acknowledged until we had to get the attention of the waiters to get us seated for our booked table. I understand it was busy but not being acknowledged wasn’t the best thing. The food was great but we didn’t stay for too long!
Can't wait to go back. The food and cocktails were AMAZING and the service was fast and fun
Fantastic food and ambience very funky. It was very very busy so a couple of times I had to ask where a particular dish was but on the whole a fantastic night and would recommend Ukai for excellent food and a great night out.
A hidden gem! Incredible platters, wide range of delicious sushi, very fine drinks and charming atmosphere. And super friendly staff.
Excellent service. Had to send food back because not cooked as requested nor was steak for me and friends hot (actually a bit cool). Otherwise tastes so good on getting it back.
The food and the restaurant was superb! Loved it! However, upon entering the security guard smirked at me and my friends ( 22+) and when asked if we booked a table, implied that we couldn’t afford to eat here. Which really isn’t the case at all, £300 later we had a really lovely meal.
Tasty 😋 very loud - would be good for date night!!!
Great place to eat and drink but waitress was a bit rude
We got a table next to the moving walkway, my chair was bumped on by staff/diners at least 10 times even though I pushed in my seat as far as I could go. They clearly overstuffed the restaurant. There was unnecessarily loud music playing, you can’t really have a conversation. Quality is pretty average but very overpriced. If I visit Ukai again it would only be for drinks in the bar area, but never to dine.
Within 5-10 mins of sitting down we'd been asked to order 3 times and told we had only 90 minutes to dine. The bill was then given to us, without us asking for it after 65 minutes. We did not feel welcome.
We had fishbones in the sashimi which I have never seen anywhere. Half of the menu wasn't available, the waiter dropped one of the sashimi upon serving. The place stinks like a pub. Definitely not returning.
Never got the table. Chaotic place. Not adapted for dining. More a club
Food was not fresh like it usually is- tasted stale and old
A great place. My 1st visit, but won't be my last. The food and service were 1st class. Expensive- but will return.
Group of 12, Monday night and every single person said the food was amazing. Soft shell crab tempura and avocado tempura are delicious
I love the vibe. Good food and good drinks. Service is good I recommend
Amazing food! Amazing environment. Lovely sake and wine
Very cool restaurant. Food good , service pleasant and good.
Music too loud. Good food. Good service, slow at times.
Really nice place but I was honestly just so loud the DJ was playing and we can really hear any of the conversation over dinner.
When you arrive, there were three men at the door. I get that part of it is a bar, but it was intimidating rather than welcoming.
The service was good, but our waitress was a bit direct and didn’t smiled.
The food was very good, very tasty and well presented - I think! Because we didn’t like the ambience at all. We were almost dinning in the dark (the lights are very dim) so couldn’t appreciate the food as I couldn’t see it! And the music was very loud that we could’t hear each other. A real disappointment as the food was delicious.
Food was good quality however music was very loud and difficult to to hear when talking. However it was a very enjoyable experience.
A buzzy nice restaurant in the Heart of Notting hill. The food was great. The live music was a bonus too.
The food was very good. There was a band playing which added to the atmosphere. Would definitely go back.
Service was terrible. Food was overpriced. Atmosphere was pretentious.
The food was good but the atmosphere and service was terrible. The DJ was playing the music so loud you couldn’t hear each other, even when shouting and screaming across the table. It felt more like a nightclub than a restaurant, even though all the online promotions say it’s a restaurant. Half the place left because of the noise. Even the staff said the music on weekends was usually quieter. We raised it with the manager and he tried to say it was always like this on Saturdays, he didn’t apologise once. Go here if you want to do shots and go dancing, but avoid it if you want a nice restaurant with ambience, or to even hear anyone speak. Awful.
Food was great, atmosphere buzzing but the service was awful, really bad and because of this The evening was ruined. Group of 4 all eating at different times is unacceptable, they got our orders wrong and sent to other tables, little attention to detail and the manager looked out of his depth, rather lost.
