we really enjoyed our evening at the upstairs at the Grill, the atmosphere is lovely they do not rush you into ordering it very relaxed and enjoyable.
Wonderful selection of cocktails and beers. Food is cooked just how you want it and it is delicious. We will be returning for another enjoyable evening , would highly recommend
Husband and I went to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary treated so well the only down fall I have is you are very squashed as our table for 2 felt like a table for 4 sitting very close to strangers and having to ask them to move to get up from the table but the staff a very accommodating not sure if I would return.
A special booking for mum's 70th birthday. However, Upstairs at the Grill had no record of the booking when they arrived and said that it had stopped using the Open Table bookings 6 weeks ago. They honoured the booking as my dad had the reference number and they managed to squeeze them in but they had only an hour at the table. This was a real disappointment. I booked through the Upstairs at the Grill website only 3 weeks prior to their meal. Having said that, my parents really enjoyed the meal and said the steaks were superb and that they would definitely recommend it to friends.
This is the 2nd time I have had dinner at Upstairs at the Grill in the last couple of months and I can highly recommend it. The staff are great, attentive but not pestering (I hate being asked every 5 minutes "is everything OK!). The food is really good and the steaks are the best I have had anywhere. I cannot wait to go back!
Very friendly and attentive staff will definitely return
We were in Chester for a weekend with friends to go to races and found this online to book in advance. staff were very Knowledgeable on the menu and very friendly and efficient during the meal. Although not any choice for vegetarians the cheese soufflé starter and vegetable Wellington main was delicious. 2 had steak and 1 chicken and all really enjoyed the meal. Would definitely go back next time in Chester.
Food was excellent could not fault, had a great time and staff friendly
This is excellent for steaks cooked to a high standard. Triple Cooked chips are to die for. The cocktails although a bit potent are extremely well made. A little bit expensive but you pay for quality at this resturant.
Absolutely amazing steaks , the best weve ever had . Seated straight away , drinks taken and the waitress had good knowledge of the menu. My husband had the steak sharing board and i had rib eye . Cooked to perfection and the sides were faultless. Wine was excellently paired and the price was reasonable. Thanks for a beautiful meal and we will definately be back again
Unfortunately our booking was cancelled at the last minute because of a power outage. We were invited to transfer our reservation to the BarGrill. The staff at the BarGrill were lovely and very attentive. The meal was just ok. We ordered the chateau briand which wasn't particularly tender. I was rather disappointed at the cleanliness of the glasses and there was a just a general dustiness which pervaded the area where we were seated. It looked as if it needed some hot, soapy water and some TLC.
Dined Sunday with my partner after seeing online that they sell lobster, which is quite hard to find close to where we live.
Being a top rated restaurant; I didn't expect to receive the lobster and bite into it seeing that inside the meat of it was still cold and uncooked ( wasn't white it was clear/grey all the way through.
I have eaten lobster many times in the past; so I I knew something was wrong, someone that had never eaten it - may of eaten the whole thing and become sick. Anyway the waistress quickly took it back and it was cooked for longer. She did offer to have a new one cooked, but I said no the same one was ok, Unfortunately my partner had finished he's steak by the time mine came back out, and I found it was still not as cooked as the other 5 times I've eaten it in the past. They did take it off the bill, leaving us with a £78 bill for two drinks each, two starters and my partners steak; but at the same time the evening date was ruined. We do not get out for food alone often due to work and the kids, so we was very disappointed to say the least.
You can not charge these prices if food is not of quality. My partners steak however he said was nice but nothing special.
Disappointed this time with the service. We arrived early and was seated. Given the menu and left even though there were only 2 other tables. After ordering had to wait for quite a long time before the meal arrived. Whilst there I observed others served bread and butter but not us. I gave the staff this feedback when she asked at the end how we have enjoyed the meal. She replied that it was because we arrived before 5pm. The bread is only served to customers after 5pm. Does not make sense - we pay the same whether arriving at 4:30 or 5pm. There was another couple who arrived before us but they were served with bread so no marks for this.
Other tables had better service - staff explained the items on the menu one by one. We just got asked for our orders.
Not pleased with our experience on 28/5. Likely that we will not return as we came all the way from Manchester with mother-in-law for day out and nice meal
They know how to cook steaks and serve a decent meal - expensive but worth it.
Best steak I've ever eaten! Went for partners birthday and the service was flawless! Will definitely returning
First time at Upstairs at the grill and would defiantly come back. Fabulous food and fantastic service, especially in the bar area. Shaun was especially helpful and made us feel well looked after upstairs. However I was disappointed with the service downstairs, the staff weren't as personalable as the staff were upstairs, hard to catch if you needed a drink and quite slow. However it was nice to relax so on this occasion attentiveness and speed wasn't necessarily a problem. We hope to see you soon.
Excellent steaks. Great service. Relaxing ambience. A little pricey but not unreasonable given the meat quality and attention to detail. A personal favourite
Me and my girlfriend decided to visit due to a great lunch we previously had there, and it didn't disappoint. Although the only table we could book in advance was at 9.30pm (albeit a Saturday) the bar staff were incredibly friendly and made us feel comfortable with drinks in the upstairs bar area. While we drank and waited for our table we were shown the menu, wine list and the steak board from the kitchen. The care and effort put into showing us this was recognised by both of us.
As for the food, it was fantastic. We went for the USDA special cuts board, as we wanted a selection of cuts to choose from. Each cut was cooked perfectly to our request (medium rare) and presentation and sides made it the perfect choice. The great food plus the the little touches (conversation, complimentary sides) made the evening fantastic.
I would certainly visit again and would recommend this to anyone not sure on where to eat a very good steak in Chester.
Great service, a fantastic ambiance, good selection of beers and wines. One of the greatest steaks I have ever had.
We ate at this restaurant on a one night stay over in Chester. The waitresses were friendly and welcoming and there was a lovely relaxing atmosphere.
Both myself and my husband had the fillet steak and it was melt in the mouth delicious.
We both had a speciality gin, both lovely and refreshing.
It was a little pricey but I do believe, you get what you pay for and the quality of the food here was great.
Would definitely recommend if you have a special occasion to celebrate.
Excellent food, probably the best steak I have tasted. You also NEED to try the popcorn haggis - it's life changing! Attended a business meal w/ a client and they were very impressed with the food and service.
Definitely leans towards fine dining but with a relaxed atmosphere in a modern, stylish restaurant. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. The 'popcorn chicken' dish I had was delicious (with actual popcorn as a garnish). Extensive wine & beer list also. Seems to have a very good reputation in Chester and from my experience deservedly so.
Food was delicious, having lived in the US, i've been spoiled somewhat with great steak, but this was the best steak i've had since leaving (even though the Porterhouse was sold out). Staff were friendly, everything was presented fantastically, the prices reasonable, we found it was a perfect venue to celebrate our recent marriage! Thank you!
Lovely food, well prepared and seasoned. The staff were attentive and interested in the customers.
As a vegetarian going to a meaty restaurant with friends who love meat I was very pleasantly surprised - friends LOVED the meat dishes and I loved the veggie options too - success!
Excellent attentive staff who took time in making the effort of making you comfortable and covered all your needs with the service that they offer Brilliant
Lighting in both bar area and toilets very dim. One of our friends couldnt read menu lighting was that dim.
Food not overly warm when arrived at table.
Staff are very good at their job
Arrived about 10minutes early and we were offered to either be seated straight away or go upstairs for a drink, so we headed up stairs. The bar area was really nice, tidy, nicely lit. The drinks menus were explained to us, especially the "drinks bible"(my favourite). The bartender was extremely helpful and went out of his way to help my parter choose a drink she liked. Once we were settled with drinks, a member of staff went through and explained the menu in plenty of detail without presuming we knew everything there is to know about different cuts and different methods of cooking steaks.
The meal itself was fantastic and the service was the same, staff were extremely polite and professional. We will definitely be coming back in the near future and recommending Upstairs At The Grill to friends and family.
If you like beef this is the place to go. The steaks were succulent and delicious. I had the Sunday roast and again the beef was superb but spoilt by the amount of gravy and rock hard Yorkshire pudding. It was my fault for not aslking for gravy separately but it just came all piled on the plate!
The place is small and a bit dark, not really the place for children , mine aren't under 16 but they did find it a bit stuffy with terrible music ( but then my taste of music isn't what teenagers like either!) it was a birthday meal for my daughter but just a bit of a boring place with little atmosphere .
The staff are lovely , knowledgeable and helpful.
I would go there again but not with the younger generation!
The experience from start to finish was fabulous. The staff are very attentive going through the drink and food menus with you. We especially liked it when our steaks arrived and we were asked to cut through them to check they were cooked to our liking. We were only in Chester for 2 nights and found this place by reading good reviews. It made our stay perfect and we would definitely return to this restaurant whenever in Chester again. Many thanks.
The Steak was 100% Gorgeous I have dined in many a place with many top chefs but this beats them all.
Lovely food and excellent service. Felt a special place but not overly expensive well worth the money
Excellent food and service at great prices
Waiters and bar staff very attentive without being intrusive
Amazing food - the best steak I had ever tasted. The bespoke gin and tonics were great. The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating and when one of our drinks was delayed they removed it from the bill. We will definitely return as it was a treat from start to finish
Food was excellent. Daughters 15th Birthday celebration and everyone thought it was great. Staff were very good.
One of Chesters best.
The best place I've ever had steak at, and I've been to some steakhouses haha, the bar and drinks were amazing! Such a wide choice, very friendly staff, couldn't be anymore helpful, massive thank you to all the staff that made our night so enjoyable!
Excellent! From the moment we arrived until the moment we left we were extremely well looked after by all the staff. The waiter on arrival gave a brilliant overview of the drinks, from the cocktails to the wine on offer, but more importantly the steaks and the various cuts!
My wife and I both had steaks and we were not disappointed and we both left with the opinion they were the best steaks we had ever had. We would definitely recommend upstairs at the grill if you are visiting Chester, and we will be returning the next time we visit Chester.
Everything about this venue is excellent, staff are very attentive but not overboard, fantastic classy dinner venue and we would recommend a visit.
Great food, ambience and theatre. Unique atmosphere in amazing venue. Steaks are top class with some very unique cuts all cooked to perfection. Remember this is an experience so go with it.
Excellent range of Steaks - one of our party ( a trainee chef) had the expensive Wagyu steak as a special treat and it made his weekend, he never stopped smiling for the next day whenever it was mentioned . All our other steaks were cooked to perfection. Only area of improvement could be the cocktail menu upstairs - there was a short menu , but the main list was very long and was not clear on what the ingredients of other cocktail options was.
Otherwise excellent food , great ambience and attentive and helpful staff.
We have been here on many occasions and we have always had an outstanding evening of high quality food and excellent high quality service. Price is expensive but would highly recommend to anyone as there is no where to beat it in Chester.
