What a wonderful experience. Gourmet food of the highest standard from the 6 taster menu .The waiters gave good information on each course. The taste and flavour were delightful as was the delicious wine.
Had a great meal the six course taster with the wine and must say it was enjoyed by all four of us very much! Not only the food and wine but must mention the service is outstanding, Recommended highly.
We booked Van Zellar's due to the write ups on-line for my husbands birthday. We have eaten in some Michelin stared places and this place was up there with the best of them. We had the taster menu and every course was perfect, the staff were not pretentious which made a nice change and did a super job of reccomending a perfect wine to accompany the meal! We will defiantly be going back!!!
Not the cheapest meal you will ever have,or the biggest quantity, however the quality of the food is superb and the service is understated, discreet but very efficient. This was our third visit and the experience has proved to be consistent.
We wanted a special and memorable experience and so chose the 10 course taster menu and my husband had the wine flight to accompany this. The ambience in the restaurant was not too quiet but allowed good conversation. The service was impeccable - efficient and very pleasant. The food was delightful and you just kept looking forward to the next course long after you were getting full. The food was described to us when served and the wine was described and explained as to how it went particularly well with that course. We were there for almost 3 hours and the time passed so very quickly as there was always something interesting on which to focus. Not pretentious at all just a relaxing delightful evening - would certainly recommend.
excellent memories every time we go and we don't go often enough.
We had the 7 course taster meal. Beautiful elegant and tasteful. Excellent service
My friend and I had a wonderful evening at Van Zeller. The staff were very attentive and the atmosphere in the restaurant was very relaxed for a restaurant of this standard. We both chose the 10 course taster menu (which ended up being 12 courses). Not all the food was to our taste however that's the point of the menu - to have the opportunity to try food you wouldn't normally order. The whole evening was a wonderful experience, highly recommended.
I am still thinking about this meal three days later. Re savouring the wonderful tastes and textures and trying to decide which course of this seven course tasting menu was my favourite. The incredible salmon, the pig's head croquette, the lavender honey and yoghurt taste explosion or the strawberry dessert.?
Van Zeller never fails to please with food, or service. Peter and Ashley glide through the evening with charm and finesse. We love coming here to eat and can't wait for our next visit !
I booked this restaurant as part of a weekend break for my wife's 40th and can confirm the evening at Van Zella was the highlight superb food that has the experts raving and when you sample it you will understand why. It is easy to understand how the Good Food Guide has given it restaurant of the year, we will be back.
This was my fourth visit to Van Zellers and im pleased to say it was just as fantastic this time as the previous visits. Having booked on the 7 course taster menu for 35 pounds promotion, we were treated to 7 courses of exquisitely presented, perfectly cooked, seasonal food that matches up to most of the michelin starred restaurants i have visited. Service was efficient, low key , yet friendly. Unfortunately it was quite quiet on the Thurs lunctime we visited but that is to be expected. For the price tag you wont get a better meal anywhere in Yorkshire.
We went to Van Zeller's for our 7 year wedding anniversary. At the time we had a 5-week old, so we called in advance to make sure that we could bring her with us. We went on a Tuesday Night so it was not very crowded, and they were kind to allow us to bring her as long as she stayed quiet.
Our baby did a great job - cried a few times and we took her oustide to calm her down but the staff were very understanding. Did the 10-course tasting menu, they allowed us to split a wine course between us. Food was amazing. Each course was well composed, flavourful and delicious. The wine pairing was really excellent.
We had the 6 course Taster Menu. The quality of the flavours , ingredients and presentation was top class. The presentation and originality of each course was outstanding.
In particular the Duck and Foie Gras was bursting with flavour, as was the Salmon and Bacon Jam (yes it worked wonderfully).
Everything from the home-made breads, the amuse-bouche, through to the desserts was of the highest order.
This was on par with the Michelin Starred restaurants that we have tried over the years. (but with a more relaxed atmosphere)
We went for the 10 course taster menu it was fautless the slow poached duck egg was especially divine. Smallmounds yielded exquisite flavours lavender and strawberries.
We Visited Van Zeller for my mothers 70Th the Staff were friendly and the service was Excellent the food was sublime. I am looking forward to my next Visit
Tried the 10.course tasting menu with wine flight. Fantastic food! Great wine choices. Attentive service.
We have been to Van Zeller's on two previous occasions. We were wowed on the first in particular. It is a special occasion restaurant - modern fine dining. This time round we were left under whelmed. It felt like it has lost it's soul!
There was no wow factor!
It almost felt like the service and the kitchen were on auto pilot. The plates were pretty and nicely assembled but that is it assembled. It almost felt like a robot could have placed the food on the plate. The service was also in the same mode. They had their script to say about each dish but no passion.
That's it...... no passion!
Get the pride back Van Zeller! It was outstanding now you are just "good" but your prices mean it needs to be outstanding!
We chose Van Zeller's for a special occasion, and we certainly were not disappointed. We chose the Chef's Special 10 Course Taster Menu, and with each course we were amazed at the presentation, textures and flavor that was packed into each dish. The waiters were very attentive, friendly, and informative with each dish. There was a lovely atmosphere to the restaurant.
We would highly recommend Van Zeller's!
We had seen a great review in the guardian the week before and thought it would be impossible to get a table but thought I would chance it - so glad it did.
I booked for Friday lunch and expected it to be heaving, only two other couples were dining which was a surprise and not too awkward as sometimes it can be in a quiet restaurant.
From beginning to end both the service and the food was impeccable, in fact the food is some of the best, most exciting and truly delightful food I have ever had the pleasure of tasting.
Thank you all at Van Zeller for a wonderful experience
Food and service were first class. The food is light, inventive and varied. Great presentation. Always with an element of surprise and akways a nice surprise.
My mother and I 'pushed the boat out' well she was paying! We had the 6 course taster menu with the accompanying wine flight. The food was supberb and we tasted wines we would normally not have chosen. The portions were delicate but packed with flavour and texture and we savoured every mouthful. Three hours later we were comfortably full and able to enjoy the scrumptious petit fours with our coffee. The staff were both attentive and friendly and thier enthusiasm for the restaurant shined through as they willingly answered our questions.
It was the highlight of our very enjoyable weekend trip to Harrogate. I would definitley go again - maybe next year when I've saved up!
Hype is one thing - delivering great food is very much another. Van Zeller is all about quality food, sublime presentation backed up by professional and friendly service. The food at Van Zeller is for grown-ups. Do not go to Van Zeller if you like, or expect to have your food presented is a traditional way - you will only be disappointed. This is a very fine restaurant providing very fine food. The Wine List is not massively extensive but provides a very good selection of both Old and New World wines.
A special treat - a drive from Hertford to sample Tom Van Zeller's cooking. We went for the 5/6 course sample menu and every course delighted and built on the previous one. Sensitive and friendly service added to the experience. The only downside - which was not the fault of the restaurant - was an unusually loud and vocal 'alpha male' on another table holding court over his fawning entourage. He got louder and more annoying as the evening progressed and as the restaurant is only small - and was not half full on that Thursday - there was nowhere to move to.... Having said that I would recommend Van Zeller for the extraordinary food.
Fantastic 7 course tasting lunch. Van Zeller just gets better.
Nouvelle cuisine taken to the limit! £50 per head with 12% service charge and portions so small you are left hungry. Good atmosphere, good service but the rest is ridiculous. Never again.
Originally from Harrogate and brought my other half to my hometown for a weekend away. Had never been to Van Zeller before, but after looking at the website, I was impressed by the menu on offer. Opted for the 6 course menu with the wine flight and I was not disappointed. Beautiful, well executed menu. Fantastic service by all staff. I would thoroughly recommend to all. The menu is not on the cheap side...but well worth every penny spent!! Thank you for a fantastic evening.
We had a stunning meal. Exceptional food and wonderful service.
We can highly recommend this wonderful restaurant.
Went on an Open table special offer and thus excellent value. Should be Michelin starred.
Food was very good on the whole, though the tasting menu is relatively expensive for what it is. Service was excellent for much of the meal, but then became annoyingly slow for the last three courses which rather put a downer on the whole experience, especially at £85 ea for food.
Can't comment on the other menus.
In summary: good food and a bit cheaper than doing that kind of thing in London, but without as good service (when we went, at least).
Excellent food, very good service, best and maybe only real fine dining in Harrogate.
Excellent food with an array of interesting flavours. Overall one of the most satisfying meals for some time in a very pleasant environment. Only criticism was the slightly nervous and rushed description of each course put in front of us. Will definitely return soon.
Our first visit to Van Zeller. We had the 7 course taster menu. Adventurous and delightful food. Imaginative, beautifully prepared and presented. We also followed the recommended wine list which perfectly complemented the dishes. The service was also informed and attentive. We would thoroughly recommend this restaurant and will be returning when the taster menu changes (every month or two).
If I could only have one meal out a year this is where I would go! I would dream about going and then spend the rest of the year waxing lyrical about it! The food is of the highest quality, cooked to perfection and served with respect. Amazing combinations that tickle the taste buds and make you wish you could try what your dinner companion is eating as well!
We don't review vZ after every visit but can honestly say that from day one, we have never been disappointed in any way. Service is second to none, menu choices on paper don't begin to reveal the extraordinary courses this wonderful Team produce. Top quality ingredients worked with skill and inventiveness which make you smile even before the first mouthful. It is just so exciting. Every time.
Disappointed more than anything with the ambience. No background music and no interaction between staff members and customers. I live in France for 3 months a year, this restaurant is very expensive and not worth the money.
My wife and I visited Van Zeller on Friday lunchtime to celebrate my wife's birthday. We were mightily impressed-it was incredibly good value for a 7 course taster menu. We will return. They deserve a Michelin star.
Our second visit to Van Zellers, the service is friendly but professional and dishes are fully explained. The wine list suits all with good quality wines available in half bottles. We had the three course dinner which includes amuse bouche and pre-dessert with coffee and petit fours extra. The food is excellent and what you would expect to find at Michelin restaurants but without the price tag. My vegan diet was catered for without question, infact the attention to detail was exceptional and many restaurants could learn a thing or two from Van Zellers in how they look after their dietary customers. We do not live in Harrogate but intend to visit every couple of months, we love the place that much. Highly recommended.
This was my second visit to Van Zeller and I had a fabulous memorable meal. Each dish was original and combined flavours in a delicious and exciting way. The wine list was broad but not daunting and very fairly priced. Service was friendly and efficient. This was as good a meal as I have ever eaten. Very highly recommended.
excellent service, beautiful melding flavours with fresh produce a little different from the norm.A great dining experience.
So impressed with van zellers. Inventive menu but plenty of tasty options, attentive service without being too invasive, beautiful tastes and textures in all aspects of the food we ordered. Great value for a special experience.
