Willy's Wine Bar
Just a stones throw from Fenchurch Street Station, Willy's Wine Bar is one of the most established and popular wine bars in the square mile. Famous for ‘probably the best Fish & Chips in the City’ the venue is full of tradition and charm, with open brickwork, dark wood and subtle lighting. Towards the back of the bar is the restaurant which serves an extensive English menu, together with a range of daily specials.
Willy's is ideal for parties and events, with its versatile space lending itself to a whole variety of both formal and informal functions, including
sit down dinners, birthday parties, corporate events, wine tasting evenings, drinks and canapé receptions, to name but a few. In addition, our staff have many years of experience in operating City bars and their unique style of service and hospitality is renowned and appreciated by all of their regular customers.
Good food and unassuming service
Thanks Nigel, we hope to welcome you back to Willys Wine Bar again soon!
Willy’s is a great place to have both lunch and dinner. Staff is very nice, friendly and professional. Angelo assisted us and he has been brilliant. Food was also very very good and very fast in being served. Keen to come back again.
Hi, Thank you for your review. Please do come back again- contact us to get booked in!
Excellent food service and beverages/wine
Hi Simon, thanks for your review. We are delighted that you enjoyed the food, service and wine at Willys Wine Bar! We hope to see you back very soon!
Food was outstanding but disappointed to receive a 12.5% service charge on my bill which is excessive for a table of just 3 people!
Hi Paul, Thanks for leaving a review, we are glad you enjoyed our food! We have a 12.5% service charge when we provide table service but please note this is of course optional! We do hope to see you back soon. K
Not that busy and yet 30 minutes to be asked for our first drink order. Meal then served and wine arrived 5 minutes later. Sadly, one of the meals returned, the lamb shank may have been slow cooked but certainly not for sufficient time...the only compliment I can pay is that it was replaced promptly with fish and chips (this was not included on the final bill, which was kind). Not sure who is at fault for our poor experience ....but I am fairly sure I won’t be back....unless things dramatically change
I am a regular at Willy's but this time, was very disappointed. We were seated quite quickly but not asked what we wanted to drink for 20 minutes, followed by another 10 minutes before being asked for our food order and then, another wait for the food to be brought to our table.
Unfortunately, there only appeared to be one elderly gentleman, waiting the tables, during a very busy lunchtime. Having been to the restaurant before, I think this is the norm.
The food was ok but not great.
Will not be at the top of my list for future lunches, although would still be happy to 'pop in' for bar meal/sandwich.
I ordered the battered haddock special and my guest ordered the fish cake. My haddock was well seasoned and the peas were delicious. My guest's fish cake was lovely apparently, the poached egg was superb and the yolk very yolky, just right. Service was prompt and we didn't have to wait an eternity for the food, all washed down with the recommended glass of Rioja.
Good food which reflects the description on the menu The specials are usually good
Service good and food can be served quickly which is important if work calls after lunch
Willy's has been doing what it does best unchanged for over 30 years. Even the free match boxes they give out haven't changed. We chose to stand in the bar area this time rather than the restaurant (the restaurant is always excellent, renowned for the Fish and Chips) as we felt like sandwiches rather than full on sit down.
Again the sarnies haven't changed, always the Jamies City Special (chicken, bacon and chesse in Chiabatta) is well received as well as steak. good chips and the legendary honey mustard sausages... we need to go back shortly!
An old favourite, sure but one that never lets you down; great offer on a very good Malbec, excellent food, service fine. Found us a table even on a busy Friday lunchtime. Always a winner.
It's been a while since I was last in and the bar has changed as has the menu, only superficially to look at but the food is now more of general bar food rather the restaurant feel you had before.
The experience was fine but not the "best fish and chips in the city" as previously proclaimed!
A solid lunch option if a little uninspiring.
The service was very good.
Always a fun evening food and service is great.
Old city wine bar. Delivers
A lovely meal with good service.
Have always enjoyed Willy's for it's food and service but have always found the TV's in the restaurant area incredibly annoying. It's put me off coming here on many occasions, but now, finally after so many years, no TV's! I hope this is a permanent change, and they haven't merely got rid of them to install at a later date a jumbotron!
It is a fun bar/restaurant with a good menu and a decent pub atmosphere. The food was ok, but it was between Xmas and New Year, so a limited menu. Even so the sandwiches were served of very 'normal' bread - which was a shame as £9.50 is a lot for that sort of sandwich. Beers were good and service was fine. Will definitely go back and try during a less quite period.
Willy's hasn't changed in decades, and I suspect it never will, but that's why I go back. It's not fine dining, and the television in the dining area still distracts to a remarkably annoying extent (please get rid of it!), but it's consistently good food for a decent price. The fact that the waiters have also been there for years means that they know their customer base well, so the service is very good. Not somewhere to go for a flashy meal, but for an informal lunch it's perfect.
Good place for casual business lunch and not too expensive. Nice menu. Good service
I attended Willy's Wine Bar for a lunch with a business associate of mine, and as usual, the staff, food and wine at Willy's did not disappoint. Whilst the wine menu had changed since my last visit, the recommendation from our Waiter was superb - especially given my lack of knowledge on French red wine, and the absence of my usual choice given the new menu. Both my associate & I enjoyed our latest visit to Willy's Wine Bar.
Food excellent, wine fantastic and the service from Cord and his team was top notch as always; in fact even better than ususal. Cannot recommend this place highly enough, never had a bad meal here. Well worth seeking out.
With most of the main dishes, they are covered in a sauce. I think it should be written on the menu, as it is full of creamy and quite tasteless.
I love this place and have had many good evenings there. This time I took colleagues for lunch before Christmas. Sadly we were served by a waiter that was so rude, it was almost comedic. A real shame as the staff here are usually lovely.
Unfortunately, a little disappointed in this trip. The restaurant was really busy, we were not served for a long time and had to ask to be served and then 3 of our preferred options were sold out.
Will put this down to being Christmas, as the food/service here is usually very good. Will be going back.
Always a pleasure to eat at Willy's. Will be back
Need more servers in the restaurant area...just one man who is quite run off his feet and therefore service quite slow.
Also it's way too loud! You have to be shouting to be heard by people sitting next to you.
Pate an excellent starter however and food in general good..
An underground cosy venue, reasonably priced with good service
Had a really enjoyable business lunch. The location is ideal. Food, service and ambiance were all very good and will be going back.
Had a very enjoyable lunch at Willy's. The food is always very good here, the service and ambiance were also very good. Did get a little loud at times, but it was a busy lunchtime. Will go back.
Good solid food for business lunches that can't afford to splash out too much .Tables slightly too close together to make talking business easy as the sound seems to echo in this basement but would revisit as not much choice in this price range in the city.
The fish batter was a bit greasy the chips lacked a nice crispness, they should learn the art of multiple cooking. Guest said his liver was very good. Very varied wine list gives choice of flavours and prices to suit most. Ok for a quick business lunch but don't go here to impress guests. Very busy at lunch time but service was still attentive.
