Casual but smart restaurant with dark wooden tables, beige bamboo wall paper and wooden flooring. This is a very popular Indian vegetarian restaurant established as part of the Woodlands Restaurant group in 1981 in London. There are over 40 branches in India!

The restaurant is ideal for easy dining with a buzzy brasserie atmosphere. Based in the heart of Theatre and just a stone's throw from Leicester Sq ideal for a pre or post theatre dining. Woodlands has recently launched a delicious and healthy Tandoor menu in which dishes are cooked in a clay oven. Also introduced recently is a innovative Organic Wine List...you really can taste the difference as these wines are much purer and lighter with a longer finish.

Food is excellent. But they have no soya or other alternative milk and NO vegan desserts except sorbet - which is a very poor showing and rather spoilt my birthday meal. Even the birthday special wasn't vegan, so although it was my birthday, I couldn't eat it!! Wake up Woodlands - the vegans are coming!

Coming from France, we wanted something different to eat before going to the Novello theater including vegetarian and gluten free options. We were absolutely surprised with the meals and everything was great! From the Indian cheese to the vegetarian samosa!

As usual, great vegetarian food, and I am a meat-lover! Even my critical mother-in-law loves it. Staff is friendly but dont always understand orders placed or provide wrong meal. We had to ask again for an ordered bottle to be provided. Still, I'll be coming back.

Excellent choice for vegetarians and lovers of South Indian food. A tad overpriced but I guess that's what you pay for the location.

An excellent meal, very relaxed atmosphere, excellent menus - I'm vegetarian, but the person I was dining with is not and they enjoyed the meal every bit as much as I did. Great choice for coeliacs too, as a large part of the menu is gluten-free

Good food close to theatres and cinemas. On internet you find a separate menu for vegans with quite many dishes on it. In the restaurant this list is missing on the menu. So vegans have to find their options by checking all listed dishes. However the vegan drinks are clearly marked on the menu. But since the quality of food is over average, it's worthwile to spend a few minutes reading the menu.

I have eaten at this Woodlands on almost every visit to London. This time though, I found that the portions were much smaller and prices same so effectively raising prices. I spoke with my servers and they too confirmed that they are getting far too many similar complaints. This used to be one of the places I recommended to friends and family but I can no longer do that given small morsels being passed as dishes. I hope the owners see this and similar feedback from others and bring back the previous sizes.

I don't like negative reviews but my experience was so bad, I regretted choosing to go there. Service was non-existent, when we arrived there was only one guy working there (I had the impression is was probably the owners son, who had no interest int he business) and the restaurant wasn't particularly busy, 20 mins after being seated and no one came to take our order, I had to go the bar to ask the waiter to come over and take our order. My fiancée was chocking and I asked him for water and there was no urgency! 6-7 minutes later, a waitress came to start her shift and she instantly got us the water. Service was very poor. The food was the biggest waste of money, we ordered poppadum's which arrived stale, we ordered the chilli paneer which had a bad gone off smell to it and it felt like it was reheated from frozen, the portion size wouldn't even feed a small child on 6 small pieces of paneer. we also ordered the mix grill for £13, which you only get 2 florets of broccoli, 2 florets of cauliflower, 2 mushrooms and 2 small pieces of paneer, not only is this a rip off, it was bland and tasteless lacked any flavour. I ordered a Salted lassi, which arrived sweet with jeera in it. Truly a disappointing, I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Starters were tasty and authentic.
Curries had a good amount of heat although the sag aloo was too slimy in texture for my liking.
Desserts were sweet and authebtic, albeit not to everyone’s taste.
Mango lassi was a little disappointing.

Well worth it for vegetarian fans of Indian food.

Food was good but we were waiting 30-40 mins to be asked if we want a drink and then the food came before the drinks.

There was only one person working but by the time we left there was 4 or 5 so I imagine after 6:30ish service would have improved.

Staff were very friendly though!

Use to be my favourite place. I am not sure what happened. Is it a management change. In spite of complaining they didn't had sense to remove service charge. Won't recommend to anyone. Food was disaster too.

The food is outstanding. However the service is the only part that lets it down as often you have to get their attention to get served. The decor is just minimal, but you don’t go for that, you go for the food!

A lot of chaos and noise around our reserved table. Could not get to the table as there was no space to reach the area!
The food we usually eat without onions ( sambhar) was no longer on the menu. My idli was a small misshapen ‘thing’. Not 2 fluffy idols I usually love to eat there!
One does not mind paying more for good food.

We used to love this restaurant, but on this occasion the food was disappointing (meagre portions and some items not available). Decor is shabby, and whilst staff were nice enough, there was zero ambience. Loos need refurbishing. We were left feeling disinclined to eat there again.

Unwelcoming decor and unhelpful staff .
The room is dingy and long overdue updating
The waiter took no care over explaining the complexities of South Indian food to us.
Our one course took 45 minutes to arrive ( on a not very busy Tuesday lunchtime . The dishes were of reasonable quality but unimaginatively present
Altogether , a rather dour experience, not to be repeated

Went here a number of years ago and had a great time. Went back for the wife's birthday to discover place had lost power.

I had included both my number and my email address in my booking as such could have been contacted before arriving to say that they couldn't open.

Staff were flippant and didn't appologies for failure to open or for not contacting me.

Very shabby outside and old and dingy inside. The staff were pleasant and the food was very good. It suddenly became packed out with lots of indian families and their young children. Cute but incredibly noisy! We went for my husbands birthday as we were staying in a hotel just around the corner but wouldn’t go again. Shame it could’ve been so much better.

My first time eating at Woodlands, but not my first time eating Southern Indian cuisine.
The staff were friendly and attentive without being intrusive and the vegan menu was excellent. I had medu veda to stat with which are a lovely spicy doughnut served with 2 chutneys and a sambar, medu vada was lovely and light and not at all greasy, the cocunut chutney was delicious as was the other chutney (it might have been peanut can't remember) and the sambar was beautifully spiced. My partner had the chilli garlic mogo which she enjoyed, again nicely spiced. For our mains I had the Pesarattu Dosa (mushroom masala filling) which was thin and crispy and again expertly spiced and delicious, my partner had the Mushroom Chettinad with pilau rice which she said was "incredible".

The portion size was very generous, so we didn't have room for dessert!

Great food, really nice restaurant and very friendly staff make eating at Woodlands a very enjoyable experience.

We will definitely be going again, next time we are in London.
